Ellie was seated in the dining room, in front of her a plate piled high with vegetables and steak. Both things she'd seriously missed in the past year. Despite everything, she rather enjoyed eating her fill. Again, something she hadn't much of a chance to do since the invasion ( Read more... )

The Doctor had no such nutritious compunctions. His Gallifreyan metabolism allowed him to go without food for days at a time, so when he eventually decided to eat, he tended to reach for the high caloric content. And besides, he found that this incarnation had a peculiar predilection for chocolate...

Thus, juggling a rather hefty slab of chocolate cake and a glass of milk, the Doctor looked for a place to sit. Actually, since the enormous banquet hall was mostly empty, he was looking for someone to sit with.

"Hello there?" he said cheerily to the young lady at the table. "Just in for a snack and I do hate to sit alone. May I join you?"

"Nice company?" Ellie didn't believe that one bit, "I wouldn't say I'm terribly good company...not these days anyway." She was rather certain that if she was an alien, humans wouldn't be high on the list of her favourite species. Not after she'd seen some of the terrible things they were capable of.

"Why are we so special? All I've seen in the past year is death. That isn't worth being thought of fondly."

"Oh, Ellie..." He shook his head with a wry smile. "I'm sure that nothing I could say could change your mind from that dismal point of view. And I certainly don't mean to belittle anything that you've endured. But... oh, Ellie, you must understand that there's so much more to humans than violence. You create and cultivate, you make innovative solutions out of paper clips and chewing gum... and you make sacrifices for one another." He squeezed her hand again. "That creativity, that compassion, that is humanity, Ellie. Not war."

Ellie gripped tightly to the Doctor's hand, the double pulse strangely comforting. "I used to believe in people, that there was good. I used to even believe there was a God." Ellie shook her head, "I don't know what I believe anymore." It certainly wasn't in a God who forced teenagers to risk their lives fighting wars.

"There is good," the Doctor insisted. As a confirmed agnostic, he wasn't about to approach the God issue, but he had seen and believed in the miracle of selflessness.

"There is good on Earth, and in the universe. I see it everywhere I go, too many times to deny its existence. And you cannot deny it, either. You've seen it too, even in the midst of a terrible war. As long as there are people like Robyn, and like you, willing to fight for something they believe in, even if no one else will, no matter what... then there will always be good." He smiled at her. "I hope that you can believe in that, someday."

Ellie's gaze lowered to the table, "I'd give anything if it meant that they didn't have to suffer what we went through." It wasn't that she was selfless, it was more a selfish desire to be able to see her friends again...and perhaps spend the rest of her teenage years as a normal teenager. Her gaze raised to look at the Doctor, "I hope...I hope that I can too. Someday."

"That's the spirit!" The Doctor beamed a smile at her, but it quickly faded into a frown as he reached for his pocket watch. "Ellie, do you have the...?" His hand stilled on the thin watch chain and he swallowed uneasily. "Never mind," he continued. "In any case, I should probably be returning to my research soon. Though I could certainly stay if you wished!" If Ellie had anything else to get off of her mind, he wasn't about to swan off in the middle of it.

Ellie's brow furrowed. "Are you alright Doctor?" He'd been so kind to her that it was the least she could do to return the favour.

"No...it's fine, if you've got something else to be doing I won't keep you from it. Thank you...for letting me talk...it's...helped." She attempted a smile for the Doctor.

A smile. What luck. And the Doctor certainly wasn't about to jeopardize that by pouring out his woes; the young lady had quite enough of her own. "No, I'm fine, just fine," he insisted, getting up from the table and smiling gently. "And I'm glad that it helped. I do hope that you'll come and find me if you ever need to talk again."

He took a step away from the table before pausing and turning back, as if he'd forgotten something. "Oh, yes! And Ellie..." Stepping up to the seated girl, he stooped to catch her in a tight, fierce hug. "Brave heart, Ellie," he whispered into her hair. "It's easier to find good when you're looking for it." Releasing the girl, he walked out of the banquet room, turning to wave as he left.

Ellie nodded, not quite convinced but happy to let the subject drop. "I will..."

She resisted the urge to run from his arms, and once she relaxed herself she all but clung to the Doctor, a bigger smile on her face as she returned his wave. "I'll try to look then."
