He definitely didn't feel safe here, not yet. Hopefully not ever. When a man got complacent, he got sloppy. Made mistakes. Sometimes he even ended up dead. That was not in Jack's game plan.
For the first time he came across another solitary soul outside the Hotel. He approached slowly, not wanting to startle her.
"It's been my experience with deserts that they tend to get cold at night. If you're going to be out long, you might want to grab a blanket or something."

He stopped a couple of feet from the side of her lawn chair. His hands were stuffed in his pockets as he tilted his head back to see the emerging stars.
"As far as I can tell, I'm new 'kid' on the block. Colonel Jack O'Neill," he said, pulling his hand from his pocket and holding it out for a handshake. "I do a check of the grounds every night. It's a just a habit of mine."

"Hey, this place kick you out or is your air conditioner broken and you figure you'll catch some breeze out here?"
Her air conditioner was broken, but she fixed a couple days ago. She couldn't sleep with the heat.
