Paying respects

Rat's gotten vague directions to Sarah and the Doc (and Thorn), John and Anna, Harley, Gibbs and Mel, but he's been pretty scarce in the days just before the funeral. The city cemetary is tiny, next to what was an abandoned church, and is now used for weddings and social gatherings. There's still not much religion in this place, as if nobody's ( Read more... )

Mel arrives, dressed in a black dress. It's one fitting for the era, but it's not over-the-top. She wonders if she should have actually worn black. She didn't even know him. But black is something you wear at a funeral.

She arrives, and sees Rat. She tries to act inconspicous, scooting over to Rat. She sits next to him, silent until he says something.

((Didn't know if Gibbs is going to show up or not or if it was just Mel...))

She's better dressed than most of the other people gathered there. One woman in a floral dress, life jacket, and ratty straw hat keeps muttering to herself. Willie's friends weren't exactly upper class.

"Hey..." Rat murmurs and gives Mel a tired smile. He slips his hand around hers and squeezes gently, as a message of thanks.

((D'oh *smacks self* Added him to the list. Dunno how busy Bridgie is at work.))

Sarah arrives not long afterwards, in a somber black dress. She's holding a bouquet of lilies that she intends to place on Willie's grave. She takes a seat close to Markus and smiles sadly. "Daniel won't be coming," she murmurs apologetically. "Something happened to him..." She leans in close and whispers, "An el-o-el."

Having discarded both the suit he wore to impersonate Dr. Schreber and his own battered old tuxedo (The former barely fits while the latter is overly formal), Thorn has settled for jeans and a newer Christmas sweater. He follows Sarah and sits a respectful space apart from her, relaxing slightly as he takes in the others attending. This is not a formal affair.

Once they're all settled again, Rat gives a nod and the man by the casket looks relieved. He clears his throat, rustles a couple of papers on the podium, and begins ( ... )

Sarah has a good guess of who actually wrote Willie's eulogy. She keeps her head bowed and blinks away some unexpected tears. She only met him once, but she was fond of him, and feels somewhat responsible for his death. If only they had caught Ume sooner, or had made the beach safer somehow.

Mel knows that Ume killed Willie, so she feels more than a bit responsible and guilty. She holds her boyfriend's hand, and at the woman giving her opinion, Melinda chokes back a snigger.

She'll go up with the others.

Despite the poor delivery, Thorn marvels at the words said. Rat has a mastery of writing that's well put to use here. He bows his head, shedding no tears, but timidly offers Sarah the use of a clean handkerchief when he notices hers.
