Sarah remembers walking down into the pit before, when Daniel wanted to show her the machines, when he asked if she wanted to learn how they worked with that hopeful look, and she had said yes, and he had smiled at her.

It's not the same. It's not the simple quiet of an underground place, it's the ominous quiet of something that should be happening but isn't, or is about to happen all of a sudden with a loud and violent "Boo!"

Instead of ominous voices, the first thing she hears is a soft baritone voice singing. Left alone with a nervous young man, a creepy little girl, a vacant sick man, and a bunch of aliens, Rat is singing. It's an entertaining and slightly jazzy number about someone's breakfast being ruined, because in this situation he's decided that something light and entertaining is in order.

Cornelius is pacing fretfully near the door, clutching his spear and scowling.

Charlotte, on the other hand, is sitting near Rat looking rather like a princess holding court. She is listening intently to the music and watching the man's fingers move over the guitar as if she's never seen anything quite like it. The other Strangers are clustered together a short distance away. Mr Sleep is keeping an eye on the girl. The rest are milling around, going through such supplies as they have found and attending to one another's injuries.
