religion

At first, I was afraid to talk about religion because I dont know much or care to enlighten myself. Then the last post, I got a little biblical, and I got a response from Rachel, whom I applaud for her zealousness, enlightening me to the saving grace of God. It was at this point that I realized that I can't please everyone, and frankly, Religion is ( Read more... )

i agree as well theres no proof that any of these religions are correct and anyone who invests their time into religion is wasting their life away

i disagree i feel as though people would still be the good law abiding people if they had no religion and like you pointed out some religions lead to the killing of many other innocent people so whats the point of even having any religion

This would be an issue if religion was a major cause for violence. Sure, sometimes the system breaks down and we get people like Hamas, but that's the exception, not the rule. I think it'd be nice to know what percentage of the religious population has history of criminality or violence... maybe 0.3%? That's just a guess... but I bet the percentage of nonreligious atheists/agnostics that is "bad" might be as high as 2% or something. Again, no basis for my estimates. But it does make sense that God keeps people in check better than they can keep themselves. Maybe studies have already been conducted... what do you guys think?

relgion is a huge cause of violence think about it 9/11 would not have even happened without their religious beliefs id have to say youre way off in ur estimate and even if it is a low percent i think 1 death caused from people who have a false belief in some god is not necessary and there have been thousands

I'd say I agree with a lot of what you said, maybe even all of it. But I do think that in, certain cases, religion serves one purpose. It gives someone a sense of culture.

Take me for example. Everyone knows that I am Jewish. However, I am in no means religious. My Judaism gives me a cultural background. Who knows if some of the stories that have been told, but it is still cool to hear them. They are kind of like legends. Just as there are American legends like Paul Bunyon and that guy who went around and planted apple seeds (I honestly don't remember his name), their are Jewish legends like David and Goliath, Moses, of the miracle that today gives us Chanukah and presents.

I know so little about Christianity, I can't say if this applies to that religion as well. But I think that you can accept religion on a cultural basis without having to grasp on to the spiritual or "God" part of it.

just the fact that the most religion has to offer you is fictitious stories, which you related to the ones in childrens books, prooves that it is unneccessary, and by no means contributing much to anyone.

darin,
this doesnt pertain to this entry, but its to the previous one. You seem very eager to help these third world countries out in Africa, but why is it so bad to have Bush help out Iraqis?

-written to start another political debate haha!

adam your so witty muhahah

Anyway, I think the African problem is a much more widespread terror, its not just in Africa, its in Asia, Europe, America, its worse than SARS..

I just think we dont do as much because they have nothing to give back.. The Iraqis can give us oil, what will the Africans give us?? new and more painful ways to pierce ourselves?

yep.. thats it

I'm pretty sure that if we kill everyone with HIV or AIDS right now that less people will die from it in the long run. Let's bomb Africa.

Haha, just kidding. ^_~
