religion

At first, I was afraid to talk about religion because I dont know much or care to enlighten myself. Then the last post, I got a little biblical, and I got a response from Rachel, whom I applaud for her zealousness, enlightening me to the saving grace of God. It was at this point that I realized that I can't please everyone, and frankly, Religion is ( Read more... )

I'd say I agree with a lot of what you said, maybe even all of it. But I do think that in, certain cases, religion serves one purpose. It gives someone a sense of culture.

Take me for example. Everyone knows that I am Jewish. However, I am in no means religious. My Judaism gives me a cultural background. Who knows if some of the stories that have been told, but it is still cool to hear them. They are kind of like legends. Just as there are American legends like Paul Bunyon and that guy who went around and planted apple seeds (I honestly don't remember his name), their are Jewish legends like David and Goliath, Moses, of the miracle that today gives us Chanukah and presents.

I know so little about Christianity, I can't say if this applies to that religion as well. But I think that you can accept religion on a cultural basis without having to grasp on to the spiritual or "God" part of it.

just the fact that the most religion has to offer you is fictitious stories, which you related to the ones in childrens books, prooves that it is unneccessary, and by no means contributing much to anyone.

prove that the stories are fictitious. also, we already covered this, religion gives people morals.

actually, my moms uncle is a priest and he's told me that all the parables in the bible are recognized by teh catholic church as just that, parables, or fictitious stories. they are just there because they teach morals. and i dont know that many people that follow the morals of religion farther beyond what is the law anyways.

the law has grown out of the religious moral code. take for instance the ten commandments. no adultery, no murder, no stealing, all things that are part of our law today. would they be there w/o that...probably, but the old laws that our legal system grew from was based solidly on the morals of the church.

and the morals of the church were created by men. so yes, i do think that even without religion men would have been inclined to create the same laws for society.
