Two-week old puppy
A stray dog gave birth in our property two weeks ago. (Don't ask how or why...)
There are 5 puppies. Two black, two brown and a grey one.
The breed? 100% askal. The mother is black with nice hair and long legs.
Our maid has been taking care of the mother, apparently. She's been giving her food and water so she could breastfeed her pups. The mother dog has already bitten two passersby and we've taken full responsibility for their shots - even though it is not our dog. It has been a stressful two weeks. The kids haven't been going out to play.
I'm looking for a vet to come in - the mother needs help. She's not ours and we cannot take care of a dog (no yard and not enough help). So the mother will eventually need a home. I want the vet to give her shots - whatever's needed. But we need experts to come and capture her first, so we can put her on a leash or something like that. I don't know. I haven't had a dog since I was 13. And we know how I feel about strays and rabies.
As for the puppies, I'm going to find homes for them. Three of my friends already expressed interest. They are the cutest things. The vet will come and give them shots too but I think they're too young. Only 2 weeks old.
We can't go near them... afraid of the mother. But our helper is sort of friends with the mama dog and she took one puppy... so I was able to take a photo.
Tomorrow I try to photograph the other four.
They are adorable. I wish we could keep one. My daughter is begging to keep one. We will have to seriously discuss this, Patrick and I.
FAQs
1. Why don't you call PAWS?
I did. We are in touch. Here's an excerpt from their email
We can help you get the dog and puppies vaccinated, treated, checked-up, etcetera - our only query is: where will the dog stay in the meantime? The PAWS shelter is currently full. We depend on our volunteers and kind people like you for "fostering" (giving temporary shelter to) the dog until such a time that one of our quarantine kennels gets freed up. This can take anywhere from two weeks to three months.
The reason I am asking is that the Anti-Rabies Act (RA9482) does not allow stray/unowned dogs to be staying out in the streets. These dogs are collected and euthanized. All our efforts will be for naught if the city pound gets the dog.
Please let us know. Thank you.
So yes, we will foster the dogs until we find a happy home for them.
2. Why don't you call the barangay?
That was the first thing we did. And the people there said something awful. They said we should poison the dogs!!! And then they'll come and get the bodies. WTF!!
3. Isn't there a city pound?
Is there? I'm afraid of what they'll do to the puppies.
4. Why are they strays in your neighbourhood?
Because it's like that here in Metro Manila? I don't have an answer to that. But I wish that strays would be neutered and given a home. Can this be done? I'm willing to sponsor 10 vaccines and neuterings in this neighbourhood... but apparently once stray animals are vaccinated and neutered, they have to be given a foster home.
Can someone help? I want the mama captured so she can be given proper care (shots etc). No one is brave enough to go near her except for one of our helpers. But she needs help doing that...
We will also be needing help finding a home for the pups.
