TVD 3x20: Sorry to spoil your seven minutes in heaven...with the rest of the episode.

Apr 27, 2012 15:12

Hmm. Let's see. I don't really know what to say about this episode. My mind keeps swinging between fury, righteous anger, and total indifference. After the glory of 3x19 last week in all its 10k monstrosity-inducing, flail-worthy excellence, I always knew 3x20 was going to be a letdown. I also knew that it was going to be a rough episode for me in ( Read more... )

a filter what is it?, no show do better, tvd, the vampire diaries, fail, episode reaction post!, watching the sun rise as i type

I have no words (except, I do...) part 1 upupa_epops April 28 2012, 02:38:18 UTC
Be warned, I'm in the mood.

The scene opens with Klaus. Painting. I literally had to pause my recording immediately and exclaim "You're KIDDING me."

I actually had to ask Alex if Klaus is indeed painting, because I couldn't believe.

He was one of the only things about this episode that didn't once make me roll my eyes or sigh in resignation or dismay at one point or another.

THIS. I mean, one line made me flinch. Other than that - congratulations on your face, sir (especially your eyeballs), carry on.

Did Esther really need to possess Rebekah just to get Alterlaric to show her the location of the stake?

She needed to possess Rebekah in order to lure Klaus to school, so that she could lock all the vampires in one place. Still - LAME.

why couldn't the three of them have just gone as girl dates? THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED

You and me both, honey.

I'm sorry, what is a Caroline?

To get the obvious out of the way, I am utterly *headdesk* about the idea of it being Stefan's 'turn.' So, so many problems with this.Caroline is being ( ... )

I'm sorry, what is a Caroline?

I'm not quite sure. I would ask the show, but I'm pretty sure they don't remember either.

Caroline's speech deliberately mirrors Rose's.

See, I understand that, and I agree that that's what the show thinks it's doing. The issue is that, as annoying and pandering as Rose's speech was, it wasn't categorically WRONG. Whereas nothing Caroline says makes any sense. Just. Grrrrrr.

And it's not even her idea! Caroline shoves it down her throat as something STEFAN WANTS HER TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOTHING in this episode was about Elena. I'm pretty sure the show has recast Stefan as the female romantic lead as well as the male romantic lead.

And as for the second part of that quote, I'm not going down without a fight? HOW IS THIS ABOUT YOU, CAROLINE? This is not her battle. This has nothing to do with her. She's inserting herself into this situation and getting in Elena's head, removing any sort of Elena's agency.

She's behaving exactly like she's behaving every single time when she's making everyone attend various important events. She treats it like just another social event. Only, you know. Her little emotional blackmail is cute and harmless when she's making everyone participate in senior prank night. Stops being cute when she TALKS HER CHILDHOOD FRIEND INTO ASKING OUT HER ABUSIVE EX-BOYFRIEND BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT HE WANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what to say. I don't know how to comment. I do not know words in English language that would express my feelings now. I know a few in my native language, but couldn't actually say them out loud, because my mother was home all day.

I want to make one thing clear: I don't blame Elena for this.Either ( ... )

Interesting. I hadn't thought that this was actually consistent to Caroline's character, mostly because it was too gross to handle. But I suppose that level of controlling is part of Caro's personality. It just usually isn't used in such a vile way.

Either I'm projecting, or Nina actually tried to play Elena as forcing herself to go through the motions for a good part of the episode. Might be wishful thinking.

I definitely thought this too. Perhaps it IS wishful thinking, but it really seemed like Elena was trying to power herself through this. I wouldn't be surprised if that was intentional.

I have some rage for writing for Elena, but I have no rage for Elena. Actually, I am even more protective of Elena right now.Exactly how I feel, man. Protect our girl from her terrible friends, terrible ex, and terrible writing ( ... )

Because, truth be told, I don't buy that Damon would suddenly be so adamant to take Alaric out.

It rubbed me the wrong way a little, but I can actually absolve this? Damon discovers that "Alaric" was not taking Bonnie's herbs, he knows he's still wearing the ring, he knows that he's pretending to be "the good Alaric". So Damon concludes: Alaric is dead, and his body is possessed by some supernatural entity that needs to be taken down. Of course, Damon is wrong. But, according to his best knowledge, Alaric is already dead, and this is why Damon wants to take him down. It's the character's huge and tragic mistake in judgement, not the show's mistake in characterization. As much as I like that Damon is so smart, he can't be always right.

So who spent the whole evening pouring salt around the entirety of the school?

The Winchester brothers?

When Esther forces the blood out of Elena, I was legit enraged.I actually liked it? In a morbid way. It answers the question why Elena did what she was told in 3x14. Well, because when she doesn't ( ... )

Yeah, I can buy your reasoning for Damon being defeatist about Alaric. I cede to your superior logic.

I actually liked it? In a morbid way.

Oh, I definitely liked it too. It was twisted and awesome, and it's always good to remember that Esther can actually be scary. I just hate seeing my girl hurt in any way!

BECAUSE SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SORTING OUT HER FEELINGS, AND YET THE EPISODE WAS 100% STEFAN-CENTRIC AND WE DIDN'T GET A GLIMPSE OF ELENA POV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS x 10000000000000000000000000000000000000. THE ACTUAL FUCKING WORST.

You know, reading your recap was actually kind of cathartic.

Glad I could help. ;)

Alterlaric makes a point to say that "Damon's too arrogant to think his only friend would betray him," and he's wrong. He's actually underestimating Damon and his intelligence. But Damon-stanning aside, it's a nice touch, because it speaks to the generalizing disdain Alterlaric feels toward all vampires, which is ultimately proven to be unfounded. Subtle, and I like it.

OOOH, good catch! And it's exactly what you'd think if you weren't inclined to give Damon the benefit of the doubt, because he puts on that front so much.

Couldn't she just have gone to him in her own body as she did in Rebekah's and reveal that she's on his side? Someone explain this to me.

Huh, I hadn't thought about this, because I figured she was just there to mirror what she was doing to Ric. Or maybe she really was dying and she needed vampire-power to sustain her zombie self for a little bit.

(why couldn't the three of them have just gone as girl dates? THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED.)I FELT SO CHEATED. And yeah, I share your concerns about the jarring ( ... )

Yes, precisely. What can I say, I have a kink for people underestimating Damon. ;)

I almost wonder if that and the 20s theme weren't clumsy attempts at subtly reminding us how fucked up Elena/Stefan is? Failed attempts, but still.

Ooh, interesting. I hadn't thought of that. I do wonder if the show intended for us to see more than what we actually saw, but then again, I am always confused about what the show wants us to think.

In fairness, I really do think that's Stefan trying not to be jealous, and to let her know that she doesn't owe him an explanation. It is almost worse that I do think there was an effort against making Stefan a jerk here, but still.

Yeah, I agree with this, which absolutely DOES make it worse. I think that Stefan IS trying to be a good guy, which means that both he and the show are horrifically ignorant about him as a character.

And for real on the Klefan, the bedfellows ( ... )

heh. Yeah. I feel like it's one of those things where there are so many authors, all of whom have at some point thought a ton about these characters and this story, that I do usually feel justified in assuming it is there for us to pick up on, from someone.

But the final scene with Damon was flawless, so, well done, show.

Damom Improves Everything.

(I was literally thinking earlier today that there is just no way the writers don't intend for Klaus and Rebekah to be understood as in love. Simply no way at all.)

I am so right there with you on that.

I, too, find it odd that the show keeps acting like Matt/Caroline/Tyler is still a thing. It is not.

But my resentment over this issue goes back to 3x14,...

I agree with you on the Caroline fail this season, but the real reason I copy-pasted this was because I could add this sentence to, like, every comment or post that I make about this show now. It all goes back to 3.14 for me, all the bad, anyway.

But do I even need to LOL at how all the Mystic Falls high school students have super nice, period appropriate garb for the 20s (commonly sold at the Gap near you!)? Shall we say it together? What are you even, Mystic Falls.

LMAO. I've decided that there must be a boutique in the town square that sells nothing but Mystic Falls special event appropriate attire. Because, REALLY.

Perhaps this is me seeing what I want to see, but it ( ... )

LOL, pretty much. They must have the largest warehouse in the state. Must have a stock for every decade and occasion.

I thought all of Elena's behavior at the dance was sad and forced. I mean, she didn't even really want to HAVE a date--she wanted to go with her friends--so I thought it was very awkward for her.

Yes, this. I thought Nina's acting was very effective in communicating that, so I just wish so fervently that SOMEONE had noticed and commented, or even HELPED. Elena just wanted an easy night with her friends. Her friends should have given her that.

A Salvatore leaning = my ovary quivering.

True statement is true.

Damon Salvatore (and Ian Somerhalder) win everything. EVERYTHING.
