Tastes Like Food

As I grow older, my focus seems to be more and more local. I have done my share of international travel, and still think there's no better way to expand my understanding of the world. But lately, my trips have been more around the West, or to attend friends' weddings.

An essay I read by Brian Eno brought the idea of a "Big Here and Long Now"Read more... )

I just joined facebook and have been thinking about this quite a bit as that put me back into touch with some of my JET buddies I made while in Japan. Trying to maintain friends on a national or international level is a lot of freaking work. It's hard enough for you and I to remain in some sort of friendly social contact and we have proximity, mutual friends, and a social organization on our side. I'm interested in reading that article. I'm sure I'll have more to say after I do. As always, I love what you bring to my LJ experience and my life experience for that matter. There are few people that I know that like to sit around and talk about why humans do the shit we do and other such philosophical/social debates than you!

Facebook is weird in that you can reconnect to people who you have thought about but lost touch with, in a way that is way lower impact than sending an email. In fact, Facebook is the opposite of email newsletters/blog communities--in the former, you reconnect with folks you've lost touch with, in the latter you make friends (or at least acquaintances) with people that you might never meet.

Speaking of getting together, I do hope we can do that soon. It isn't easy when life happens, but it's always great hanging with your cynical, humorous bad self.

1. I am going to make that Pecan Pie.

2. I've also, lately, been focusing more on the local. I suppose with travel-- though that has had more to do with resources-- but more with food. I'm not perfect at it, but it is fun to prepare meals with food you know didn't have to travel thousands of miles to make it to your table.

3. I think it would be simply delightful to write for a food blog. But, is it necessarily focused on local food? It doesn't really seem like it... there is a recipe that involves processed pepperoni, Philadelphia cream cheese and Pillsbury crescent rolls. What are your thoughts?

1. The pie looks great. I'd happy to volunteer to eat some--I know, I know, I'm a gentleman. (I am sorry I missed your Day of the Dead party--when something comes over Facebook, I'm never sure how much the invitation was directed to me.)

2. Fun and challenging, and cheap (sometimes). It reminds me a bit of climbing--a reminder that 'man is [not] the measure of all things' and that just because we have the hammer of technology, we don't have to use it as if everything was a nail.

3. I agree that 'Tastes Like Food' isn't focused on local foods. But I happen to know one of the authors ('Bacon') and the other two are located in Denver as well. I will be focusing, or trying to, on local food issues/recipes. I'm also contemplating joining Slow Food Boulder, or at least attending an event or two: http://www.slowfoodboulder.org/
