CHAPTER 8
An uncountable number of tears and courage I carried on my own
Maybe aiming for the sky
Maybe this hand can grab what no one ever reached
Wherever it is, wherever it is
Always this dream I kept drawing…
Akashi
Sakurai Sho’s right foot was tapping impatiently on the white floor while he was waiting for the authorization of the attendant behind the counter to go to the bedroom upstairs. In less than a minute, she smiled back, allowing his entrance.
Anxiously, he got into the elevator and, while it was going to the fifth floor, he checked his backpack for all the things his friend asked. At a glance, he didn’t miss anything, so, he closed the zipper and got out to the corridor, in order to find the room 538.
He entered it without knocking.
- Good morning. Did you sleep well, Satoshi?
- Better than other nights - the cop answered him, without looking at him, attentive to the orthopedist’s expression, who was examining his knee. - Have you brought my clothes?
- As you asked me - he showed him the backpack before placing it over the vacant bed, next to the door. Then, he went to the orthopedist. - Are you really discharging him today, Masaki-kun?
- I think so - the young doctor smiled. - His knee swelling decreased considerably. And the result of his last magnetic resonance didn’t show any severe damage to his brain.
- I told you I was fine - the cop said, annoyed.
- You did, but we needed to confirm it. You entered the hospital unconscious, with noticeable bumps on your head. How do you think we could discharge you without being sure that you had nothing more serious?
- Even then, Aiba-sensei didn’t have to keep me here for five days in a row!
- Yes, I did - the orthopedist answered, patiently, while writing something down in his papers. - Besides, my team and I had doubts regarding the treatment to be used on your knee. Luckily, you only had a superficial rupture in the meniscus, which we were able to solve with a simple arthroscopy. Usually, in this kind of procedure, the patient can leave the clinic in the same day, but we wanted to be sure it would be enough.
- And is everything alright with him?
- It seems to be so, senpai - Aiba nodded, turning his attention to Sakurai. - But it’s good to keep an eye on him, since, according to his charts it’s not the first time our friend have a problem on his knee.
- Yes, I know. That is why I got worried.
The doctor poked the psychologist on his shoulders.
- Everything will be alright, if he don’t overdo.
- That means I can go back to work? - Ohno interrupted them, annoyed to listen to them talking about him as if he wasn’t there.
- In five days - Aiba answered, writing something down. - But with caution.
- What does that mean?
- Bureaucratic job from six to eight weeks, in the best scenery…
Ohno made an indignant face. Aiba couldn’t be serious. Right in the moment when he had found a safe clue of the localization of the drug dealer he had been searching for months… Actually, it was due to this clue he got involved in the accident that leaded him to the hospital.
- Aiba-kun… I can’t stay that long away from the streets…
- You have no other choice, Ohno-san. You shall wait enough time to be able to do the physical activities you are used to; and, even then, you will need to be cautious for them not to involve too much impact.
The cop bit his lower lip, obviously annoyed with the instruction.
- I will discharge you. But be sure to follow the treatment at home. I’ll prescribe you a painkiller, if you have any pain. Avoid walking for too long and keep your legs up as much as you can during these first three days.
- I will make sure he will do as you say, Masaki.
- It’s extremely important that he follow all the steps I’m advising him, senpai. If you can stay with him during this recovering stage, it will certainly be quite favorable.
- I had already decided this on my way here. He will stay in my house while he is in sick leave.
- I don’t need a nanny! - complained the patient.
- Put an ice pack over his articulation three or four times a day. - The orthopedist ignored the cop’s comment and kept talking to the psychologist. - I will schedule for him to return here in a fortnight and, depending on the development of the damage, I will suggest him a physiotherapist for some specific exercises.
- I see. Thank you for your care, Masaki.
- It was nice seeing you again, Sho-senpai. It has been quite a while since we last saw each other.
The psychologist offered him a tender smile.
- I have been a tad busy in the last months. We can recover this lost time, though. What do you say about having dinner with me one of these days?
- I will love it - he smiled, excited. - Well… I’m leaving you alone to prepare the discharge papers. If you have any question regarding your condition, I will be at your disposal to answer when I’m back, Ohno-san… - he bowed politely and left the bedroom.
- It’s amazing how you change in front of Aiba-kun - Ohno said, adjusting his position in the bed.
- Eh? - Sho raised his eyebrows. - What do you mean?
- You lose this dour posture that you always have.
- Well… no one can stay serious for too long beside Masaki. He is always so excited, so energetic… since college days. He is always rising up the mood of everybody around him.
- Yes, he is really adorable. And an excellent professional, who was very attentive to me - Satoshi agreed, with a smile. - Changing the subject, though, about taking me to your house, I don’t think this is necessary.
************************
None of the arguments he used, however, convinced Sho that he would be able to take care of himself. In the same day he was discharged, his friend took him directly to his apartment, taking on the responsibility for his recovery as if he was his mother. Even when he was away, at work, his friend called him hourly, reminding him of taking his medicines and applying the ice packs.
At night, two more voices - of Sho’s sister and her daughter - joined to the recommendations he ended up knowing by heart. At the beginning, he was annoyed by all the fuss and the excessive care, but it didn’t take long for him to get used to the attention he has not received in a long time.
Besides, he really appreciated his moments with Aya-chan. The little girl, although noisy and too energetic, was adorable. He could barely control himself up with so much cuteness whenever she arrived with her small toy first-aid kit and, seriously, as if impersonating a character, exchanged the bandage on his front for one of the childish patterned ones she had. He also enjoyed reading for her, caressing her delicate and silky hair while they watched TV and she would snuggle closer to him.
When he decided to go back home, especially in the first night he spent on his own after the surgery, he realized he was missing those moments.
Damn accident.
Moreover, thinking about it, he cursed himself for being so stupid and impulsive. Besides taking a delivery man out of his own motorbike by force to chase after a suspect, he skidded with it when trying to deviate from a car that was coming in the opposite direction.
Luckily no innocent, apart from himself, had been hurt in his maneuver. The damage to the motorbike he asked the department to reimburse with part of his salary, but that wasn’t what bothered him. What annoyed him the most was the fact that he would not be able to make his job for a while. Bureaucratic jobs were a punishment to a street cop, a sentence of incarceration.
He sighed, bored, and in an attempt to ease his loneliness, he pressed a button on the remote control of his stereo. The music that echoed belonged to one of the albums he had bought by Ninomiya’s suggestion.
Nino…
It had been ten days since they last seen each other. Suddenly, the memory made him want to see him. He had somehow grown used to his presence. He was a very enjoyable and mysterious person and those meaningful eyes wouldn’t get out of his mind.
However, he didn’t know if Ninomiya felt the same. Even though it was him to take the initiative of their kiss that night, he didn’t show any other interest beyond that.
It is true that they have shared many other kisses afterwards, including some more daring caresses and Nino was answering to his assaults with the same urgency. He thought that the invitation to go to a more reserved place was the natural thing to do after so much intimacy. Considering the refusal, he might have been mistaken.
Maybe Ninomiya just wanted to enjoy the night, without having to end their meeting with something more intimate.
He felt frustrated, nonetheless; he couldn’t deny.
Not for being left without sex.
Even though his entire body wished to relive the madness of their first meeting, he wasn’t just wanting to satiate his most primitive needs beside the bleached-haired boy. He wanted more from Nino. He wanted…
What he wanted, after all?
He sighed, unable to find an answer.
He just knew that, as soon as that damned repose ended, he would return to that CD store.
*********************
Ohno looked at his image, checking his looks. Soon after, he sighed, as he always did before entering that store. His excuse was that he had gone there to buy the last CD of Cosmos, the new band of his favorite guitar player.
He had seen in the news, while he was bed ridden, that the release had been a success. He remembered Nino saying he would reserve one for him as soon as the albums arrived and he wondered if the lad remembered that.
He entered, with a carefree expression and glanced at the counter where the attendant used to stay. He wasn’t there, though. In his place, there was a girl he had already seen in other occasions.
He went to the racks and picked up the CD he wanted. Then, he took a superficial look at the other titles, with a fake interest. He believed that, if he waited a while, Nino would show up. Maybe he was inside the shop, performing another kind of work. Then, he picked up a headphone, where he could hear the samples of the albums in his hands.
When the seventh music started, however, he got tired of acting like an infatuated teenage girl, who would stalk her object of adoration at a distance. It would be much simpler if he just asked an employee.
- Excuse me - he asked, as soon as he got closer to the counter. - Could you please inform me where can I find Ninomiya-kun?
The expression of the young woman who, so far, had been smiling kindly at him, changed to a surprised face.
- I’m sorry I can’t help you, sir. Ninomiya-san didn’t come to work today.
- Is it his day off?
The girl showed him an embarrassed expression instead of answering, making him raise his eyebrows in worry.
Then, she looked at her sides, as if trying to be sure that no one was listening, before proceeding.
- I have already seen you with him, sir. I know you are friends and, therefore, I… I’m sorry if I’m being indiscreet, but do you know if Nino-kun has fallen ill or something? He hasn’t come here for a few days. The manager is quite angry for he didn’t even sent him a notice…
Ohno swallowed hard, concerned.
- A few days? I'm… do you have his number? Any idea of where he lives?
- Well… - she seemed surprised. Maybe she thought that, as a friend, he would know about those basic information. - We can’t give any personal information from our employees to our customers, but I’m really worried. I will give you his number and address.
As soon as he left the store, holding a piece of paper with Ninomiya’s cellphone number and address he took a deep breath, apprehensive. Has something happened to him? He felt his heart racing like it was about to come out of his mouth.
He went straight to the apartment, but there was no sign of him. According to the neighbors, he hadn’t showed up there in a few days. He called several times, sent a lot of messages, but didn’t have any luck. For three days, he went back to all the places where they had already been and was unable to get a clue about his whereabouts.
After his fourth day looking for Nino, he realized how excessively concerned he was. Why was he so committed to find him, after all?
Maybe Nino didn’t want to be found and who was he to interfere?
He gave up on his senseless chase and started focusing on work, even if he hated the work he was doing at that moment. For medical recommendation, they had transferred him from action at the Narcotics Division to the bureaucratic work at the Police Station. After all, he wouldn’t need his knee to fill an Incident Report.
- Ohno-san, could you please hear a statement of a case that arrived here yesterday night? - asked one of the officers, as soon as he sat in his position. - One of the accused had refused to answer our questions and we had to let him cool down. He might be more willing to cooperate today.
- What is the occurrence?
- Fight and depredation of a private property, a bar in Roppongi.
Ohno made an impatient face. He hated rowdies.
- Bring me the suspect - he told the man.
He adjusted the computer's monitor and opened the Incident file. He noticed when a body was pushed to the chair in front of him, but didn’t even spent a second to look at him, his eyes locked on the screen.
- Your name? - he sighed, annoyed. - I’ve asked your name… - he repeated after a few seconds of waiting.
- Ninomiya Kazunari.
His voice, low and trembling, seemed as painful as the bruises spread all over his pretty face.
