A Second Chance

enchanted1312"...And the worst thing was that every time someone asks him about his name,
Max would always say “Changmin” with so much ease that it worried his mother so much more.
She had to correct him each time with ‘Your name is Max’."

It was February 18 2005 when it had happened.
Some people had said that a part of Kim Jaejong died that night. That after the fateful night, he wasn’t the same anymore.
How could he ever be the same? After all, it was his best friend, his lover that was killed by a shotgun in the forehead. Fate had decided that if he couldn’t have Changmin for himself, no one else could.
He was seventeen.

Annie Lee was only 18 years old. A woman with so many things to do, so many places to go, so many people to meet, so many dreams to realize. But now she wasn’t sure if she could do all of that anymore. Not now when she had to take care of her baby that was about to be born two months earlier than expected.
“It’s a boy!” The doctor said with a smile. She had chosen the natural way of giving birth. Hearing the cries from her baby for the first time, she desperately wanted to hold him in her arms right away but due to the fact that her baby was premature, he was taken to the incubator immediately.
When she had the energy to stand up on her two feet, the first thing that she could think of was to see her child. And at moment, seeing through the glass window, she fell in love with the little frame in front of her.
But she didn’t notice the mole on the baby’s forehead.

People always said that Max was going to grow up to be a very intelligent boy; something that made Annie’s heart swell with pride for her son. These remarks increased when Max started to form words, small words, even though he was still quite young to do so
But of course, as a mother, she was very happy to hear him talking even spluttering words at time. But she was very concerned when his first word wasn’t mom or even dad; but ‘Jae’.
________________
Two years old Max liked to talk a lot. His mom or anyone else around him didn’t mind it but then the worrying thing about that was the fact that everything that came out of that mouth was only lies.
“My house is brown, and I have my own room.” He spoke, beaming with pride when in reality his house was white on the outside, and it was only a small apartment with one room.
“And my mom always makes me breakfast before I go to school.” But the fact was Annie had to work and she could never cook, didn’t even know how to.
And the worst thing was that every time someone asks him about his name, Max would always say “Changmin” with so much ease that it worried his mother so much more. She had to correct him each time with ‘Your name is Max’.
But he would keep on saying that it wasn’t true.

She wasn’t surprised when Max knows how to speak more Korean words that she could ever do. After all, her parents were Koreans, immigrating to America after she was born. Besides, he spent most of his time with them.
But then, being able to speak fluent Japanese shocked her again and again. Even native Japanese speakers said that he was really good at it.
And it remained as a mystery on how he could ever learn that language itself.

“Annie, I’m hungry.” That was the first thing that she had heard from Max since the day he could learn to form a full sentence. She was tired; with so much work to do, so much pressure that had fallen upon her, it felt as if she’s carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.
“Annie…” He said once again.
It’s not mom, “uma”, or even “okasan” but Annie, as if she was just a mere sister to him. When Annie recalled back her past memories, she never heard of her son calling him ‘mom’.
“Annie!” He shrieked again and this time, she exploded.
“Look!” She screamed, grabbing him by the shoulders, shaking him. “I’m not your sister or anything like that. I’m your mother and I expect you to start calling me mom! You are six years old already and I believe that you know who I am in your life!”
And he cried.
“You are not my mom!” He shouted back, trying to break free from her grasp. “My mom lives far away from here, she makes me breakfast all the time and I have two beautiful sisters!”
“You better stop saying those lies or I will be forced to ground you.” She had gotten even more upset when she heard her son uttering those words as though he really did believe in it. “Your name is Max, Max Lee, not Changmin! I’m your mother; you live in this small apartment with me, not in a brown house. You are my only child, and you are mine!” She shook a finger in front of her son’s face, trying to emphasize the words that she was saying. “And you better understand that!”
After that, Max Lee had stopped saying any more of those ‘lies’.

She walked fast on the hallway of the Evern High School. It’s Max first day and he had found himself stumbling into trouble. She couldn’t believe that her son had done something bad. After all, he had been a good boy since ‘that day’.
The first thing that she saw when she reached the director’s office was Max sitting on a chair, in front of the big oak desk. She could vividly see some bruises and scratches on his face.
When the horrible talk was over, she took her son’s hand and pulled to her rented car. “What the hell is wrong with you?” She yelled at him. “Why did you punch that kid for?”
“You wouldn’t understand.” He said as he entered the car, still refusing to look straight into Annie’s face. He was resting his head against the window, looking outside, wishing that everything could be over but it wouldn’t be that easy.
“Of course I wouldn’t understand if you won’t explain anything to me!” She screamed.
“He’s Yunho, ok?” He blurted out. “He did this to me!” He said, lifting the hair over his forehead to point at his mole.
And Max was right, she really didn’t understand.

Max Lee was 16 years old; he had one brother now since his mother had re-married when he was 13. He lived in a light blue house that was close to his grand parent’s house. His mother knew how to cook and he had his own room, all by himself.
He loved his life, but still, it wasn’t complete.
His mom was with his baby brother, playing with him when he gave her a small folder filled with coloured papers. All of them had a different country’s flag.
“What is this?” She asked.
“I want to go to Korea. I want to study there.” He replied firmly.
“Max, I’m sorry but you know that we don’t have enough money to send you overseas.” She replied, frowning but Max knew the answer to that.
“Since I have a scholarship, you wouldn’t have to pay much. Besides, once I’m there, I could get a job.”
And she couldn’t not anything but to agree.

It was February the eighteenth. 17 year had passed and Kim Jaejong was now 36 years old. Everyone agreed that the years had been kind to him since he could pretty much retain his youthful face.
There’s not much to say about his life, he’s the owner of a small chain of supermarkets. His partner to his fleet of business died years ago, leaving it all to him to expand it. And he did.
Every Sunday, he never failed to visit the Enmore Cemetery to visit that one person who kept on consuming his whole mind. But what he found there wasn’t something that he had expected. There was a boy of not more than 18 years old; standing in front of it and Jae frowned.
“Who are you?” Jae asked, walking closer to the young man.
“Jaejoong hyung.” The boy whispered, turning around to face Jae, masking on a sad smile. “Don’t you remember me anymore?”
Jae looked deep into the boy’s eyes. There’s something about that boy that made him felt all fuzzy inside. The bouquet of flowers fell from his grasp as Jae took another step forward. “Changmin?”
And the only answer was a passionate kiss on the mouth with the boy’s arms around his neck, holding him so tight.
“I missed you so much.” Jae whispered, wiping his tears away.
And for the first time in seventeen years, he smiled for real.
