On the minus side, this story of loss of innocence is wrenching.

On the plus side? The guys are HOT. And this time the screencaps are LARGE.

Here is a rather shrunk-down sample of one:

While this sounds very good I am traumatized by just reading your recaps and do not think I could ever watch. :)

Oh no! It's really not depressing. I swear, it doesn't feel depressing. It's way less traumatizing than Tree of Heaven or Bali. I promise!

With Ah Hao, half the time I want to strangle him and the other one to hug him and reassure him it will all be better.

And (like with every character) I can totally understand where he is coming from.

Danzi would be my pick for a boyfriend, btw. But of course he is pretty wrong for Yu Yen because they are both quiet so each needs a sparky person, IMO.

Danzi is totally awesome. He is the only real grown-up in the group, isn't he? The funny thing is, I can totally see why YY fell for AH instead. He is so charming and so headstrong when it all starts. Just this utter oppennes is totally irresistable (Danzi takes forever to let you in). But of course when the mob business starts, it affects Ah Hao, who is always transparent, the most. Ah Qi is too laid back and Danzi is very mature, so they can process internal inconsistences better but Ah Hao is basically destroying himself from the inside.

I noticed the shifting narration and I really like it.

oh...I can't even tell you how much I cried when I realized she got raped...it was even more devastating because, really, if it wasn't for her knowing him and falling in love with him, she would be at home sheltered protected and happy. Geez. That really really kills me because she doesn't just lose her innocence(no, not just in 'that' way) she loses herself and character and it scars her for life and makes her keep it a secret from Ah Huo...and eventually this ruins their relationship...Guuuh!! So depressing!!

Yes, so true. That really was the pivotal moment, much more so than him joining a gang, or anything. And such a big secret is bound to ruin a relationship. Argh. *stabs Ah Bao in the face*

It is a REALLY pivotal moment...I can't just not point out that once again, very like Mars-but very unlike Mars.
Qi Luo was raped as well...but Ling helps her and well...I think it's because Ah Hao isn't as strong/mature...or just more angsty...he can't really get over it that she was raped...but I think she has...slowly...but progressivly...I really find that "The Outsiders" is like Mars, without the happily ever after and with a protagonist even more screwed up/tormented than Ling...which is hot but scary o.0

Of course, the difference between the revelation in Mars and here is that thr bad stuff happened to Qi Luo before she met Ling. I think it's much worse for Ah Hao to take, because it happened while they were dating and is really in some way his fault because he joined the mob (not really his fault, but you know what I mean)...

And yeah, Ah Hao is way more screwed up and tormented than Ling. He is what Ling would have been if Ling met Qi Luo ten years later and before that did get involved with Tong Dao.
