The attitudes toward gender are very interesting in anime/manga (and to a much lesser extent in doramas). Mostly it's because "boy love" is enormously popular among a certain sector of Japanese girls/women and there is a certain "type" of boy that fits into this. I've had my eyes opened to this on a number of different levels (it's definitely an element of JE which is weird because they're real people sort of putting on a *winkwink* act, ie fanservice). It's not really considered homosexuality exactly (although sometimes it is). But yes from what I have gleaned, they do like to have the boys boink. At least in the mangas they do! I'd actually love to get some reccs from someone knowledgeable for good yaoi mangas...I'm dead curious.
And I'm awfully glad you like the icon. :) *blushes*
They are so beautiful (the icons). I really love your use of colors in all of your icons (I remember that beautiful HoFD batch). I am actually especially impressed with the one I am using in the reply, because while I like the subject of the pic (:D), the picture itself wasn't one I was madly in love with because if its odd positioning (I love the Christmas kiss in Silence, which was part of the clip I posted a bit back, but there weren't any stills of it). But in your icon, it's just gorgeous!

I am not a big slasher (I prefer boys who like girls because you know...potentially interested in moi or something) but I do like the fact that it doesn't seem to be a stigma. I am not very up on yaoi mangas because all the mangas I've read are either boy mangas or fluffy het romance ones, but aliterati and katranna know a lot about those, so I am going to ask them for recs.

See, that's what I would think, normally. But I have been told by others more knowledgeable than I am, that at least with the JE boys (of which you're watching some of them in these doramas) - the fanservice is meant to titillate the fangirls (who love it) and also keeps them from having girlfriends which the fangirls would find threatening to their fantasy of having the guys to themselves. It's strange - they would rather that the boys are into each other instead of another girl. I keep meaning to write up a proper post on this subject, because it fascinates me.

I have no idea (I am equally puzzled by men who find lesbians a turn on). This isn't just a Japanese thing though. I got into 'Supernatural' last month and it's a show centered around two male leads who play brothers. The most popular kind of fanfic for it is pairing them and when casting news about some recurring female characters who could potentially hook up with the boys in the next season came out, the SPN comm was in a huge uproar
( ... )
which was interestingly evasive and brings a whole new light to the B.C. Jungle. ;)
Exactly. Those boys sure like to hang out together :) I honestly think that he is in love with Sui because she is Sui and I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he doesn't have a woman prefference generally.
