The Ratings Game - my 0.02

I was really sick last evening, but Mr Mousie, who is better than any kdrama hero to ever exist, coaxed me to eat dinner and then went out and bought me NyQuil so I could get some sleep. I am feeling much better, which is just as well as today is SKKS/Giant doubleheader :P ( Read more... )

Online fandom is convinced that it has more power than it does. There's a remarkable number of shows/films/etc that have relatively huge fandoms that never gel with the majority of people. Which is fine - but I hate it when people insist that's because the majority of people don't recognise genius. Some things are just really better suited to a niche audience; some are better suited to a larger group of people.

I too, however, console myself with my superior taste when something gets the axe. However, given all the rubbish I watch on a regular basis that might not be a very good thing to say. :)

Considering the things I watch, I believe I share your good taste :P

Online fandom is dreadfully convinced of its own importance but sadly, it has little power. Otherwise every show would be wall to wall hot guys sticking their tongues down each other's throat.

All of these are really illuminating. Also, with some exceptions like SKKS, lately I find myself more drawn to 'mainstream success' than mania dramas, I wonder why. (of course, sometimes the ratings hit + mania drama combines, see Chuno, and then it gets really fun).

I think if the drama is too narrowly targeted, no matter how good it is and how rabid the targeted population will be about it, it won't be a hit. There has to be something for everyone. E.g. You're Beautiful (not a drama I like) - I would imagine most 25+ women and most men of any age were not targeted by it at all and didn't care for it. Or my favorite Worlds Within - brilliant drama but way to idisyncratic and quirky - I could see why it never got out of single digits. O

Besides, buzz does not necessarily mean a lot of people like it. It just means there's a small group of people who are really into/obsessed over something. I know of a fandom where less than 10 actual people are involved, but each of them has like, 3 usernames in the same forum, so it SEEMS like there's lots of people talking about it, but in reality there's only 10.
