Oh, I love this drama. It's one of my favorites. It's horrible to say, but I think I love it because of Ryo and Yuki's hate to love you co-dependent relationship. They break my heart. They love each other so much, but at the same time they must hate that they love one another, because of how much it hurts.
As for the reunion scene. I was sniffy too.
And the law: I think that's what makes it the worse thing. They were two confused eleven year olds who didn't stop and think. If they had turned themselves in just for the crime that Ryo committed (if Yuki didn't try and kill her mom), then the truth is that Ryo would have most likely gotten some form of time in a juvenile center, but I can't see him getting anything harsh. He was trying to protect Yuki and it actually was more or less an accident.
My understanding of Japan is that they have almost no lawyers (as compared to the American percentage at any rate) & their laws can be a bit unique. If a celebrity couple can have a baby through an American surrogate & their child denied Japanese citizenship, then who knows how else certain situations may be handled?

They decided to raise the twin boys they had through an American surrogate mother as U.S. nationals.
