The bad news: it took about 3 years to heal completely, all told.
It started out as an area the size of a $0.50 piece remaining numb and tingly. The diameter shrank slowly (which I thought was odd, but soft tissue isn't my specialty) until the entire patch was normal again.
So there's some ammunition for your optimist, perhaps. I'm sorry to hear about your trouble.

Ugh. That's a long time to wait for a numb spot to heal on your face. I also have a big numb spot on this skin of my leg from one of surgeries I had for me knee -- but that has never regenerated. So, when my tongue went numb, I was perhaps a bit more paranoid than I needed to be.
However, my tongue has definitely improved since I last posted. I can sort of taste on that side, and I can feel the ridge of my teeth. It still feels kind of burnt and pins-and-needlesy, but it isn't nearly as uncomfortable as it originally was.
