REALLY? Oh, congratulations! Big hug! You should email Jim, the webmaster for the site and let him know, The department always appreciates success stories.
Thanks! I was so surprised I got it because I printed their information off the website and emailed them my application like 2 days before it was due.
Its going to be humid as shit, nothing but Spanish being spoken by locals ((supposedly)), and I'm gonna be 1500 miles from home. ITS GONNA BE THE MOST FUN SHIT EVER!
CONGRATS!!! i'm only in the north until august, then we will be sweating in solidarity. Viva Texas.
Brownsville is a different game, even for Texas. It's pretty politically charged, one of the few areas in the state that goes blue in elections, and truly, very little english is spoken, and the locals only speak Spanish. It's likely the closest experience in the U.S. you could have to livin in Mexico-- SO YOU GET THE BEST ADVENTURE! i'm totally jealous of the food you'll have access to.
i would definitely brush up on your spanish & mexico/immigration history-- its wonderful, and you can only gain points with the locals by attempting to speak the language. it's a little different from the region in that you won't look like anyone or speak the same language-- but just be friendly and the culture will catch you. :)
I'm so excited to hear you got this position. Shit, wish i'd logged on earlier in the week, could have read about it. however, this does mean we must get together b4 you move down there so you can have ur gift. Now i'm off to google where the hell this place is in relation to some of the other towns i know of down there...have a few contacts in texas (so surprising, isn't it?).
Oh wow that's fantastic!! Congrats! I actually couldn't figure out why you were announcing your new position so casually at first. But yeah, I would try not to let your parents bother you with this. I'm surprised because I thought they would be very excited for you- and it's only for a year. Plus, not many college graduates ever get much of a break in their intended field (I actually haven't yet either), and some NEVER do. If we were still living in IN my parents would understand that going into a particular field, it maybe hard for Indiana to just quickly offer you a great position and so close to home
