Yesterday was the first day of school for me. I'm taking three internet classes and a DVD class...12 units in all. I started on the first one last night, and it was a lesson in frustration

seems sort of moronic to have a class for "someone who doesn't know what a computer is or does" that one must take online. or requires at least a basic knowledge of the computer in order to take it at all. i dunno. sometimes i hate computers and the frustration surrounding them makes my life a misery. why o why did i choose a career that requires them?
Yes, it totally seems moronic. What would a person do? How could they access the internet? Would they have to buy a new computer of their own, or go to the computer lab at the school!
Computers are so frustrating sometimes. But they are useful.
It pisses me off that for J's physics class, I think it is, that he has to get his homework assignments from the web site, and you have to turn everything in by e-mail. The whole thing essentially requires that you have a computer. Or live in the fucking computer lab on campus. I don't know, especially at a Junior College, it seems like you're automatically making things way more difficult for the underprivileged student.
Monitors are being listed on Craigslist for around $15.
For the stronger/faster/better computer without MS-Office have you tried OpenOfficeOrg? It's not the same thing but nearly so. The only feature I've really missed is the format painter. (With a little more work the OOo stylist can do the same thing.)
OPEN OFFICE BLOWS! Jess has it on her computer and it won't work to open Word attachments for school. This is one of the things that caused frustration last night.
We have extra monitors, just not the workspace to have two of them going inside the house at all times. That's why we share a monitor.
Hm, that's odd; I wonder what's up with that; I use Open Office, and while sometimes there are formatting issues (when working with a pre-set word template like a resume, for instance), I haven't had any issues using it to open and work with Word documents. I wonder if it has trouble with whatever version of word that was being used.
Anyway, sorry about the frustrations and stuff. Once you get things sorted out, you'll be great! :)
Maybe we can separate the computers? We have the 2nd monitor in the garage and the corner desk.
This gives me an idea...
I could put the sewing machine and other crap away and we could set up the computer on the sewing table.
This will suck because I have sewing projects that I need to get done by June, but maybe the checkerboard table could house the computer monitor when I need to work on sewing stuff!
We should find out from Joel if we still have the disk for Word and Excel, if you want it on your computer. I think our computer can be made smarter, it's just that Joel needs the time and headspace to install the thingies that will make it go.
negativeland: we don't have enough data_duncanJanuary 24 2006, 13:48:41 UTC
Insufficient resources: install more thingies
MS office calls home during the installation process. Take Jess's machine offline before trying the install and don't be surprised if it doesn't "take". I've not seen Office pull an XP (where both installations stop working) but the fresh install isn't a sure thing.
The OOo feature I like the most is being able to produce pdfs without jumping through printer driver hoops. Sorry it blows chunks for you.
