Heads up to you parent-types: we're coming to your kid's school

In a joint venture between the IAEI (International Association of Electrical Inspectors) and UL (Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.), an education program has been launched entitled, 'I am Safety Smart'.  A brochure about the program can be viewed here.  We were treated to a rollout presentation tonight, and I've made the commitment to address my ( Read more... )

Sounds like a good program. Good on IAEI and UL for getting it together, and good on you for bringing it to the classrooms.

Funny thing about addressing a group of schoolkids, though. I have no problem putting on a presentation for a group of adults, but kids scare me. Barb would rather address a group of kids than adults (which is why she's the schoolteacher). I can't even put my finger on what's different, but I do know it's different. A roomful of kids is just daunting to me. But all Barb has to do is say, "Hey, people!" in her Teacher VoiceTM* and 20 kids will instantly shut up and pay attention to her. She's like a Border Collie with kids.

* Teacher Voice not available to all adults. Void where prohibited. Read and follow label directions. Not packaged for individual sale. Side effects may include dizziness, diarrhea, headaches, and an urge to write with crayons. Consult your doctor before using Teacher Voice.

I'm a firm believer in education-particularly with kids. Research conducted by the NFPA indicates that when kids have the safety message drilled into them at an early age, they retain it much better than adults who receive the same message, perhaps why we continue to see a reduction in home fires and fire deaths. Unfortunately, the US continues to lead the 'civilized' world in that area, because we're accepting of issues not tolerated by other nations and cultures.

Thankfully, I already have an 'in' with kids by being a fire guy-that gives me some cool points from the get go, even though I don't swill booze and pills like Dennis Leary on Rescue Me! :D

Can you get me some of the information? PDF files sometimes make my computer have a nervous breakdown, so I didn't click on the link. I want the stuff geared for little kids - I can take it to preschool or gear it for the birthday parties I do at the firehouse.
Thanks!

Your puter probably doesn't like pdfs because you have an older version of Adobe Reader-they're up to 7.something now. Even with my 'outdoor man beat drum' connection, I get pdfs from the USFA, NFPA, and others regularly without a hiccup.

I'll have to see what I can do-it's part of an entire $400 kit that my chapter purchased, and they kinda expect a chapter member to do the program delivery. That being said, I'd be happy to work with you to get the safety message out. (But you knew that):D

No, I have a newer version of Adobe.
I didn't know the fire safety thing was that expensive - I'll have to talk to our Sr. Lieu and see if they're interested in buying it. He'd big in the County Volunteer Assoc. and would know if it's something they might want, or if it's something my station would buy on its own.
