To Fanlib or not to Fanlib?

There's a debate going on about Fanlib and its true intentions, targeted audience, etc. You can take a look at the discussions here.

Also, a more indebt look at Fanlib's TOS.

I actually got an account there a few weeks ago. (The staff was a lot friendlier and quicker to respond when asked to create a Blades of Glory section, wich fanfic.net ( Read more... )

Hello, there. We haven't actually talked before, but we're in several of same BoG communities here and I friended you recently, in the hopes that we could discuss the characters.

Like you, I'm just finding out about this today and I remembered you had mentioned posting there a while ago. So I decided to go over and have a look see.

I might be mistaken, but it appears that one of your stories has been taken down. Please go check.

Hey! Nice to meet you. :) I'm always happy to find fellow BoG fans. I've friended you back.

Thanks for catching this! Yeah, I think some of the stories had disappeared from public view - though they were still in my library! Weird. In any case, I took down all my fic. =P I'm planning to make a post on the BoG comms to give the gals there a heads up. (Just in case they also want to take their stories down.)

I've been following the debates, too, and I've personally decided not to touch Fanlib with a ten-foot pole, or longer. Their TOS sounds fishy and the FAQ didn't help, either. Besides, they're a for-profit company and if I can't make money off my fanfic, I don't really like the idea of someone else making money off /my/ fanfic.

Plus, one of their employees replied to a debate thread I'd been following and sounded about as unprofessional as you can get. That didn't help my opinion at all.

I'm am so confused. That guy who says he's the CEO doesn't seem very professional...I mean...if you're trying to make money with writing you could at least try to, well, write right. I've never even heard about this place before. Their FAQ didn't hellp me at all--I still don't understand what they're about. The link you provided helped me out so much more. O_O Dude, they take your fanfiction and then puplish it without paying you? What are you supposed to get out of this? This looks fishy to me.

Exactly. You get nothing. Once you post a fic there, FanLib owns it. Unless, of course, the lawyers come knocking. Then, the fic is all yours and you take the heat for it.

Wow, that sucks. I'm never posting anything there! O______O I hope they fail, seriously. That is full of lose.

I've taken a "Just say NO to FanLib" policy - mostly because of the idea of clueless industry execs who know nothing about general internet Fandom Subculture cash in on what should be a labor of love. It smacks of exploitation, plain and simple.

Of course, there's also their policy that dictates that they OWN your fic once you post and reserve the right to actually *edit* it as they see fit. If the Powers That Be come a'knockin', of course, they'll have nothing to do with it and let YOU get crucified for Intellectual Property misuse.

They're out to screw people over, plain and simple.
