Day 51: Intercom, Dawn

Aug 06, 2010 06:29

The blue light of pre-dawn washed over the valley in which the Institute resided, succeeded shortly by the warmer glow of daylight. It wasn't long after that when the intercom jingled to life and the Head Doctor spoke with the same universal clarity he'd returned to at the end of the previous night ( Read more... )

It was going to be a good day.

Knives Chau repeated this thought in her head, but didn't open her eyes, at least not yet. It was important to visualize. Like that one quote by that guy said, "if you will it, it is no dream". Knives wanted to start the day right. On the right side of the bed, on the right side of life... everything - even if her bed felt a bit different. Last night had kind of been a turning point. She didn't feel so confused or muddled anymore. And then the door opened (why did it sound so different?), but before she could ask her mother for five more minutes, a far too cheery voice said, "It's time to wake up, Mary Lynn."

Wait. What? Dark eyes snapped wide open as Knives sat up straight, making the nurse that had entered the room jump back in surprise. "Oh, I'm sorry Mary Lynn," the nurse apologized, "I didn't mean to scare you ( ... )

Fuzzy. Why was it so fuzzy?

There were many, many things missing when Justin Hammer woke up that morning. One was his dignity, as he still remembered the little... incident that occurred during the Stark Expo. He guessed his freedom was missing with that since Miss Pepper Potts had him arrested, and for what? He was a victim! Just because his company was sponsoring Vanko's crazy drone projec, and how was he supposed to know that the Russian was going to turn on him anyway? It wasn't like he tried to lock the guy up. He should have been given a medal for his efforts, damn it ( ... )

By then, Hammer had his palm firmly pressed against his face, a feat that was much easier to do because of his lack of glasses. This was ridiculous. What kind of prison cared about losing his glasses, anyway? He had to be in Canada. This place was too nice to be Siberia.

"Look, maybe I'm speaking too fast for you? I don't. Need. My. Glasses. I need. My. Lawyer," He tried to speak as slowly as he could, carefully punctuating the word lawyer and made a few gestures to go along with it. "Come on, lawyer? As in, person who practices the law? I know you have lawyers in Canada too, so don't play dumb."

"... Mr. Rench, please, if you'll follow me to the cafeteria -"

"HAM-MER," He all but yelled, giving Nurse Four quite the nasty glare. "It's Hammer, not Wrench, and if you don't send my lawyer ( ... )

Ilia was trained to tackle every obstacle that came her way, but this time she wasn’t sure what to expect. Asmodeus had made his ill will towards humanity quite plain with his destruction of the little town of Durss. She knew they couldn’t very well let him continue, and they needed that sample to make the vaccine. But did they stand a chance against such a foe? Her captain had always been better at dealing with these types of situations. He could look danger in the eyes and say with confidence that he would overcome it. She, on the other hand, liked to plan ahead. But there was no helping it this time. For the present and future of Roak, it was imperative that they carry out their mission. There was no time to plan, only action.

So Ilia raced headlong into the void, that black, undulating shift in space known as the Demon’s Gate. She didn’t know what to expect, but arriving in the Demon World felt oddly like waking from a deep sleep. Slowly, Ilia fought the darkness and forced her eyes to open, barely suppressing a yawn. ( ... )

A calm sea and the promise of a distant shore served to remind Tear of fatigue, and though actual sleep seemed like a faraway dream, she had excused herself to her cabin. The crew members she kept as casual company at the start of the venture said nothing to the escape. They probably did not want to hinder an Oracle Knight, much less the sister of the Commandant ( ... )

Tear blinked, unable to process the refusal. The woman, however, continued as if the reaction hadn't occurred, "We are already late for breakfast. If you are able, please follow me to the cafeteria. I will answer any questions you might have after you have had your meal." She gestured to the exit to emphasize her request.

From the Melodist's standpoint, there existed little choice in the matter. She could either sit in her room and refuse movement until information came or acquiesce to the woman's words and retrieve the sought-for information in a more peaceable manner. One choice was more preferable than the other. The young woman drew herself to a stand and followed the other out of the room.
