Day 49: Late Evening

May 11, 2010 10:45

Although the trip was longer than usual on account of the rain and wind, the buses did eventually - and safely - reach Landel's Institute. No strange happenings yet; the patients were escorted off the buses according to the usual protocol and made to go to their rooms and change back into their normal uniforms while the nurses temporarily left them ( Read more... )

Rika couldn't help breathing a small sigh of relief when the buses actually made it back in. She wouldn't lie - after reading what she had on the bulletin, she had been worried sick. It hadn't helped that she'd also been worried...in general.

She gladly changed out of her wet clothes and into a dry uniform, then sat on her bed. She didn't touch her dinner for a few minutes, though. Instead, she looked at the doll on Anise's dresser. She didn't touch it at all, but it made her think. Maybe she should have asked for something small to bring home with her? Of course, she wouldn't be able to have Mion's doll, but...

The girl sighed. She wasn't normally so sentimental over objects like that. Rika started picking at her food a minute later, still thinking about it all.

Getting stuck with Sync for the latter half of the field trip had left Anise in a sour mood, and the girl had been uncharacteristically quiet for the trip back to the institute. Once she was ushered indoors, however, some of her tension was relieved. Sync had been one part of the reason for her uneasiness, but the other part had been her worrying over whether or not there was going to be an ambush tonight. It looked like they were okay for now ( ... )

Haku hadn't minded the rain. He had minded being kept from Artemis all day and had spent most of the time simply keeping to himself and avoiding the staff.

He was happy to be back in their room though and was feeling more ... himself lately. He smiled and thanked the harried nurse and sat down on his bed to wait for Artemis to arrive.

Artemis, however, was not as lucky. He hadn't been able to avoid the staff despite his best intentions, and it had landed him and Badou in a desperate situation. Cradling his arm as the nurse led him back to his room, he tried to bite his tongue whenever it moved or slid.

Once in his room, getting his coat off was an adventure. He tried to put on a brave face for Haku's sake, but it was severely pinched, and he winced once. Then there was the scalpel taped to his leg to deal with. For this reason, he asked her to leave and promised to return the clothes once he was done changing. He watched her go, then turned to Haku. There was a light sheen of sweat on his brow.

"It's dislocated," he said immediately after the door closed. "Badou's doctor took me hostage, dislocated my arm. Ca-can you do something? Once the staff has... gone?"

His voice shook. From his research, he knew this would be painful. It probably wouldn't be wise to put the joint back in place when there was someone to hear Artemis scream.

[ooc: Backthread? And what's the plan for NS?]

Haku frowned slightly, but kept calm for Artemis. It wouldn't do to show just how angry he was as this doctor when his friend was asking for his help. He nodded and stepped up to Artemis.

"Of course," he said. "I need you to sit down first though before you pass out."

Another life Haku would be happy to end added to his running tally. "I can re-set it, with minimal pain, but you won't be able to use it for a bit if you want it to heal right." He did a quick mental calculation. "It shouldn't take long with the rate of healing in this place, but I'll still want to strap it to you before anyone goes anywhere tonight." If that was in the plans at least.

[Yes please! ♥ And so far, all I have is that Sai's showing up, Okita's going to try to kill Sai, Kenshin's going to drag him off, then Portaltastic tiems?]

Artemis nodded, trying not to hold his arm. It wasn't broken or in need of support, it just hurt when it moved. Holding it wasn't going to fix this. He moved over to the bed, trying not to dread the moment where Haku was going to shove his arm back into its socket.

"I know it will be useless tonight," Artemis said, sitting down and attempting to breathe normally. Hyperventilating would cause him to pass out, without question. "At this point though, there's nothing I can do about it. Though if we go anywhere, having my good arm strapped to me will be dangerous, wouldn't you say?"

Haku probably wouldn't agree, and keeping the arm immobile was a good idea. But Artemis had magic to slough off and the outdoors to reach.

Kaworu was no longer comfortable in his room. It had been revealed to have never been his, which was not the fault of the unfamiliar boy he had found asleep when the nurse had left him there. Rubedo had gone. The nurse would not call him by his name. Kaworu couldn't name the emotion it triggered, although he had never truly known the Lilim, so how could he say his absence made him feel ( ... )

Another dinner in this damn place. No escape and almost no concrete information gathered, but no man-eating Zombi hordes, either. Indy guessed that put the day in the plus column, but that didn't mean he had to like it ( ... )

To say that Ludwig was disoriented was to be putting it mildly. He'd woken up in a new place, and before he'd been given a chance to get his bearings, a brightly-smiling woman in a nurse's uniform had come to him and well-nigh dragged him out of the room, as though expecting him to put up a stout resistance once he realized what was going on. She spoke rapid-fire, spitting words like bullets, bombarding him with information and keeping him disoriented. Words like 'Institute,' 'getting better,' and 'recovering' were peppered throughout, but one trio of words grabbed his attention more than any other ( ... )

Indy glanced up as an unfamiliar man was led into the room. Early twenties, blond, probably a few inches shorter than Indy himself, looked for all the world like an Aryan poster boy. Another new roommate. Indy wondered briefly what had happened to Rorschach. Not that they'd talked much, but he had at least a passing interest in the welfare of someone he'd shared a room with ( ... )

No incident then. Which meant...what? The events of last time had carried almost all the signs of a curse and this did help support that theory. Curses had long cycles, usually at least a year, if not decades or centuries. But then, the question was, what was so special about that particular date last week?

Oh, right, he couldn't know because there was no date available.

Well, at least he'd upgraded from being soaking wet to just this side of damp. Running a hand through his hair, he settled down at his desk while he waited for Peter to show. New patients. Did that mean replacements or were they increasing the size of the population? Both ( ... )

As depressing as it was, Peter almost felt as if something was wrong when he headed back to his room without anything going wrong. Everyone had been waiting for something to happen. It was as if Dr. Landel was just stringing them along, making them paranoid for no reason -- and Peter realized that very well could be the case ( ... )

It didn't take too long for the door to open again. Sam glanced over. Not wanting to accidentally spit out his mouthful food, he just lifted a hand in return. He was glad to see that Peter didn't seem to have picked up any new injuries from last night. Apparently, things had gone better than the night before ( ... )

Nodding in thanks, Peter quickly started to get changed the moment he realized that Sam was keeping his eyes down on his journal rather than anywhere else. It took longer than he would have liked, as the wet fabric was clinging to him, but eventually he peeled everything off, rubbed himself dry with a spare shirt, and then got into a new change of the Landel's uniform ( ... )
