Nightshift 42: F31-40 Hallway

Jul 27, 2009 17:17

[currently in F??, as her room is unassigned currently. Assuming it's in the F31-40 hallway for believability's sake.]

Ow.

Alkaid shifted restlessly in a cold bed: a bed that she still did not recognize as her own. Even after three days. Tch, not like she spent any time in that bed anyway. Three whole days here and all the former Demon Palace Emperor had to say for it was that she'd been rudely yanked out of consciousness over and over, only to wake up again in this stupid, hard bed that wasn't anything like hers at home. It was like a futon made of knife-bricks, or something. Well, maybe not that bad, but definitely unwelcoming.

Still, there was a big difference between now and the days before. For one, it was completely pitch-black in here. Super-dark, nothing like normal daytime. (Not that anyone could could tell between the two anyway. No windows here.) But there wasn't any light under the crack of the door. Aaaah, just another stupid creepy event!! Maybe it was a power outage! Yeah, just a power outage. Even in a stupid place like this, that stuff happened.

And there was a stupid lump underneath her crappy pillow, which she made to grab at. Yeah, felt like a flashlight, which was weird 'cause she definitely remembered losing hers. What was even weirder, though, was how her muscles felt when she moved them. Felt like she hadn't moved them for a while, or she'd slept funny, or something. Kiiiind of like how it'd felt before, waking up from that dreamless nightmare...

What the hell happened?! Why do I feel like this? Am I even in the same damn room?

Alkaid sat straight up in bed, frantically turned the flashlight on, and passed its beam around the room. No lump in the other bed, like there'd always been before it gave rise to that weird-accented girl who criticized how she ate. Bitch. And a journal. She opened it to where she thought she'd copied maps down, and cursed. Where had they gone? They'd replaced everything! She had a flashlight again, which was great, but no maps, which sucked, and - rrrgh! Why did they make it so difficult?!

The worst part was that it was so damn quiet!! Even for night! Normally there were the sounds of hushed whispers in the hallways, the click-click-click of stupid monster claws, the occasional blood-curdling scream. Now there was nothing, not even the early-night sounds of the doors around her opening and shutting. This sucked.

Could silence make a sound? Fff, that was a useless question. Obviously, silence didn't make any kind of noise! Obviously!

...Then how come it sounded so loud right now?

Sneering at the darkness and silence all around her, Alkaid stood up, poked her toes into the standard-issue slippers, and flung open the door to her room, walking down the hallway with shoulders held square and flashlight beam in front of her. She'd get to the bottom of this stupid event. And she'd make the bastards who ran this place pay.
