Nightshift 42: The Pet Supply Place

Jul 19, 2009 16:07

There had still been enough time for the nurses to gather everyone and head back, though it didn't keep Yuuhi from staying near Sakura's side, just in case.  What he hadn't expected though, was the sudden change that came early and worst of all, came fast.  In the time it took to draw breath, the scenery around them changed, as if it was some kind ( Read more... )

After she had finished talking and observing the brown mare, Sakura had turned back toward the town in preparation to return to the institute. It was getting dark, after all, and the nurses would probably be rounding them up at any minute like Yue had told her. Once they had returned, they would no doubt be subjected to the same horrors as last night.

Yet, instead of rounding them up, the nurses seemed to be jerking around in transformation. The mutations spread like wildfire, affecting the entire town within a second or two with only the occasional patient as the exception. As the landscape changed from a peaceful town to the zombie and monster-infested town, Sakura's eyes widened in horror.

"Not here... Not now..." she thought.

She staggered backwards a bit. "Why were they changing now? Yue didn't say anything about this..." she continued to think before her panic was interrupted by Fai. She looked up into his eyes, which seemed to emanate with a strength and courage to stay calm.

"O-Okay!" Sakura replied with a nod.

Why indeed. Unless they'd gotten tired of the simple games that ran from night to night in this place and decided to narrow down the patient population a bit faster, he couldn't be sure why they'd left them here, especially since they'd been so careful with everything before. It didn't add up, unless it was intentional ( ... )

Sakura's heart began pounding as the air became filled with screams and moans from other victims and the hordes of zombies inched closer. She just wanted to run away. Away from this zombie town. Away from the institute. Away from having to deal with the dreaded the nighttime terrors which only seemed to get progressively worse as time went on. But, she couldn't. Like every other patient, she was stuck in this new reality with no idea of how to return home.

She took Fai's hand and grasped it tightly, peeking at the zombies from behind his back. What kind of sick, twisted nightmare was she in?

After parting ways with Harley after their stealing spree at the toy shop - they could compare who actually came away with more and found better places to hide things on the buses back - Yukari had wandered about the town, eventually gravitating towards the Pet Supply Place, out of her affinity from animals; she kept two of them as servants after all ( ... )

Despite the clumsiness Sheena's friends tended to associate with her, thanks to her unfortunate encounters with various trapdoors and holes, the ninja was quite good at tumbling and other acrobatic maneuvers. She usually defeated herself, the clumsiness popping back up, when she was trying to do something impressive, be impressive. When she didn't think about it, it tended to work. Such was the case when Sheena landed on the bright red roof of the pet place as she leaped from the building across the street.

Her momentum took her into a controlled forward roll, leaving blood on the roof tiles, and then up onto her crouch. She was panting a little, not from exertion, but from fear. There were zombies down on the ground, overrunning the town. They were everywhere, and somewhere out there was her youkai. Sheena hoped Yukari had been smart enough to take shelter, maybe found some strong allies, or had come up with some really creative use of her gap powers to not get eaten. She hoped she could find her. The ninja ( ... )

The old mare of the pet shop had not been spared from this night's transformation. No longer was the gentle creature of the day, but now a rotting beast of the night ( ... )

If it hadn't been for the youkai sleepily swatting at the horse's snout, Sheena would have thought she was dead. As it was, the zombified horse was not helping Sheena's whole being afraid of zombies thing. Zombies were unnatural to begin with, but the ninja had actually seen the horse during the day when she had all her flesh.

Snapping out of her frozen state as the moaning from the zombies on the other side of the fence intensified, Sheena really didn't have much of a plan as she rushed the horse. She couldn't use a card on it for fear that she'd blow the youkai up as well, so she did the next best thing she could think of; she lowered her shoulder and barreled right into the side of the horse, using her momentum and all the strength of her legs to upend the beast.

The horse crashed to the ground, releasing the youkai's arm in the process, and the ninja fell with it. She did manage to get her hands beneath her to turn the impromptu fall into a hand walkover, but it hurt with that piece of wood in her side. Dropping into a ( ... )

Haku had to take a running jump on top of an old, rotted wood corral to get to the roof of the pet shop, but he made it, and without too much damage to himself. A few cuts and scrapes from reaching hands, and a spreading bruise that was easily ignored from running into a zombie. He was also covered in grime and smelled terrible. He crouched to let Artemis down.

"The roof will be safe for a little while," he said. "We can think up here." He was breathing hard, just a bit out of breath, but they were both alive and safe for the time being.

Artemis had clung tightly to Haku as they'd run, feeling hands clawing at his sweatshirt and at Haku, looking for a meal. His voice caught in his throat when he realized they were in midair, hovering over the roof of one of the stores. He supposed it might have been beautiful or romantic, if revenants weren't crawling the streets trying to eat people.

It took him a moment to get off of Haku, but once he did he frowned. "Are you alright?" he asked, putting a hand on Haku's upper arm.

Haku placed his hand over Artemis's and he smiled slightly. "I'll be fine." He would be, once he got his breath back at least. He stood and turned to look over the edge of the roof. There were a number of the creatures roaming around.

"This place won't hold for long," he pointed out. "We need weaponry and a plan..."

Artemis nodded, putting a palm to his forehead in an effort to calm himself down. This was insanity, there was no other way to put it. The living dead, walking the streets, and him and Haku unarmed.

"Right. Weaponry," he repeated, coming to after a brief moment of silent self-collection. "There's a doctor's office on the same block as the grocery store, isn't there? They may have scalpels. Or, the nail salon might have sturdy nail files that you could use. Fire is usually best against the undead, so a lighter and a can of hairspray would make a makeshift flamethrower that even I could handle."

He looked to Haku, not at all willing to approach the side of the building. "Did you have any ideas? Where would be the best safezone?"

Indy had the jacket tensed and ready to strike as he eased open the front door and stepped in. This might be easier if he could close the door behind him to prevent any more Zombis from getting in, but blocking off his only escape route might be a bad idea--especially if the other two bolted. The girl might stick around out of self-interest, but Dent had no real reason to help them.

Damn, it was dark in there. From what he could see, it seemed like they groomed pets up front, but that moaning over there didn't sound like it was coming from man's best friend...

Normally, Harvey would have been happy to have the bandages off; they were uncomfortable and made it that much harder to breathe. Still, in this case he had to wonder if being exposed would make him more likely to be attacked. The zombies seemed most interested in biting them if the blood around their mouths was any indication, and the smell of his damaged flesh might attract them.

Or maybe the fact that it was burnt would put them off. Maybe he would just blend in.

He didn't miss the woman's reaction, but she managed to refrain from any outbursts, which was a relief. He didn't have the time to deal with hysterics right now. Jones did an admirable job of ignoring it and sticking to their shoddy plan. Honestly, who fought with whips? But here he was with two people who apparently wanted to get their hands on some ( ... )

The man's face was half off, but Franziska couldn't very well be rude. He was still alive and he wasn't trying to bite her, so as long as that trend continued, he would be tolerated. Even if the wounds were a little...ghastly. Getting into the store, Franziska tried to keep her distance to spread out and make searching easier, but found that, much to her chagrin, the inside of the store was so dark it was difficult to see. Once inside, she closed the door, not wanting to let anything in at her back. Although, from the moaning, it didn't sound like it would be of much help ( ... )

He could hear them, but he still couldn't see them, and he couldn't feel any decomposing fingers making a grab for him either. Indy moved cautiously over to the second-nearest shelf of merchandise, peering carefully at the items by the dim light coming in from the shop windows. They were mostly small packages, not too far off from what had been in the grocery store--dog food, maybe? The pictures he thought he could make out on some of the bags seemed to indicate that that was the case. Indy wasn't sure he saw the point. Indiana-the-dog had managed just fine on a healthy diet of table scraps.

They had to keep supplies here for bigger animals, if the corral out front had been any indication. Where would the whips be? Indy left the next several feet of shelving for the girl to check and moved further into the store. Better find something they could use and get out of here before the Zombis--or Dent--got their backs up.

She'd shut the door, Indy noticed as he searched. Hopefully that wouldn't come back to bite them in a minute.

[from here]It wasn't better here at all. She wanted to fool herself, say that it was for just a minute, so they could stop running. So they could stop being scared. Senna glanced at Meche. The girl hadn't said anything, but the tone of her voice had been frantic. She was freaked. Senna should have been, too. So why wasn't she? Was it seriously just about the Blanks ( ... )

Meche didn't like the way Senna kept checking on her. She appreciated the gesture, but she also knew it meant that the girl was worried about her, felt like she had to protect her. If anything, it should be the other way around. She tried to take a deep breath and calm herself down, but that was a lot easier said than done for someone who was right in the middle of a mass of those monsters anywhere she ran ( ... )

All right, was something far away right now. Senna would be all right when there weren't things that ate brains and reminded her of things she was connected to. She would be all right when things like animals weren't caught in the crossfire, and little kids weren't served up to monster birds. She would be all right when good people didn't die, and people like Momo felt alive again. She'd be all right--

...She would be okay if they could find weapons. Rubbing her arm with a wince, she nodded, then took off after Meche.
