Nightshift 38: M11-M20 Hallway

Klavier had to agree. It was hard to believe something would happen to either of them without there being so much as a warning. There was a big difference between being distracted and being absentminded. Though it sounded like Endrance was a bit more informed than he was letting on, or at least had some kind of theory ( Read more... )

[continuing argument from here]

Might meet up with someone? This after Ken's previous warnings about going out on his own, plus Yue's experiences on the field at night, only made Yukito a little more concerned about his roommate rather than less. Even as he opened his mouth to object, though, he was interrupted by the intercom and the beginning of night.

He involuntarily rose to his feet as the door unlocked; his form was enveloped in light like illusory wings for a moment, and when it faded Yue stood there instead. The silver-haired guardian blinked twice, then frowned down at Ken. "Was that supposed to be reassuring?" he inquired, sounding ever so faintly irritated.

"...yes?" Ken shrugged. "I'm meeting up with Aya." He didn't mention that he was meeting up with Aya by going to the sleeping man's room after he'd gotten some air. He hadn't mentioned anything about his friends to Yukito, he didn't think. Ken opened the desk drawer concealing his clawed glove and pulled it on. Quick trip or not, he didn't intend to go unarmed anywhere in here.

"Aya." Although Yue didn't know who that was, Ken had mentioned the name once before in a context that made him think it was likely a friend of some kind. The guardian watched his roommate for a moment longer, eyes narrowed slightly in consideration, then finally turned away. "Mm. Very well."

Ken had someone to meet with (though the "might" still made him wonder) and was at least going armed. Even if he was going alone, though, Yue had to admit there wasn't much he could do at this point anyway, much to his annoyance - even if he physically tried to prevent the man from leaving he was still injured and Ken wasn't.

He allowed his silence to stretch as he took a moment to retrieve his own flashlight, then turned back with a small frown. "Be careful," he ordered, then for a second Yukito's smile turned up the corners of his mouth. "You'd better be back here in one piece in the morning."

"My teammate. One of them." Ken explained briefly. And it wasn't like the giant birds outside would go for him, they hadn't before. Anything else he could take on his own.

Probably. Maybe. But Ken wasn't exactly thinking clearly at the moment, he wanted to do something. Anything. Even if it was self-destructive and stupid.

"The last time I said that to you, you didn't come back in one piece either." Ken smirked. "I'll be fine."

Endrance turned and looked up at the speaker, his eyes opening wide. That malicious tone had sent a shiver down his spine that hadn't quite resolved itself yet, and it was a long moment before he composed himself enough to speak.

"I've never heard anything like it...and the difference between the way the voice sounded just now and the way it sounded before is truly frightening. It's almost as if he were possessed by something..."

If that was the case, it could be that AIDA was behind all of this after all. He hadn't thought that it had much to do with him, but that certainly didn't seem to be the case any longer. At any rate, things had certainly gotten exponentially more worrisome now.

It didn't help that the lights had cut out after that announcement. That caught him off-guard. He leaned back just a bit, putting his hand against the pillow, and was surprised to find something hard underneath it. He flipped it over to find a flashlight underneath.

"What? It's almost as if they want us to go out..."

Klavier froze as soon as the lights went out. This man over the PA, what game was he playing? It was clear from his comments he was either the one responsible or among those who were. After his comments about people not surviving long enough to suit his schedule, Klavier was becoming more than a little apprehensive ( ... )

"I suppose you're right," he replied, a touch of hesitation in his voice. It was all well and good to be able to talk to one person, but...leaving, and going out? That might have been easy for most people, but most people didn't try to shut out the real world the way he had managed to do for so long. It was strange and a bit scary to think of going out.

At the same time, this wasn't exactly something he could turn his back on. This wasn't like before, where he could have easily said that nothing that happened had anything to do with him, because it had everything to do with him.

Haseo's words came to him again: 'It isn't AIDA holding you back now. It's you.' That was enough for now. Haseo...I'll borrow your strength until I find my own.

"I don't like this feeling of being a pawn in someone else's game, but the person responsible for this has given us no other choice. Perhaps we should go our separate ways and see what we each find out?"

"Agreed," Klavier answered with a nod. They would likely learn more faster should they split up. It could be dangerous outside or they could simply be letting their paranoia take hold of their reasoning. Either way, nothing should happen as long as they both kept their wits about them and were wary of their surroundings. Endrance seemed like a bright lad. He probably didn't have to worry about him making stupid, possibly fatal mistakes ( ... )

Dinner had been fairly enjoyable, even if it was possible Dias wouldn't ever quite forgive the tempura incident. Whether he did or he didn't, however, the jounin remained firm in his resolve never to eat the stuff if he could avoid it ( ... )

Dias nodded slightly to Kakashi as the man left - he wasn't exactly angry about the incident, although he wasn't entirely happy about it, either; still, he didn't intend to hold it against his roommate - even as he finished changing into his own clothing. Fortunately, Kakashi didn't seem to pay much attention while he changed; he wasn't self-conscious, but he never invited inquiries as to where he'd gotten his scars.

Although somehow he doubted Kakashi would have asked - especially after the incident tonight.

Once he was ready, he slipped out of the room, already making a beeline for Claude's. The faster they moved tonight, the better.

It had been a quiet dinner, but the silence hadn't been uncomfortable or awkward in any way, or at least so it seemed to Frey--he had simply been absorbed in thought, and Takaya was the quiet sort, after all. But now that he was done eating and had had some time to mull things over, Frey turned to Takaya and asked, "Shall we go out tonight? I managed to gather only a little information, unfortunately..."

Takaya looked up from his radio and frowned. "Alright," he said. "Anywhere in mind?"

He hadn't minded the silence either, since it had given him time to settle his thoughts and shove Kagetora father away. A whole day without an incident... Amazing.

"Uesugi seemed most interested in finding the second, ruined town that lies somewhere outside the walls. I agree it's a good idea, but the only person I found who had been there apparently didn't keep track of directions. They went over the wall near the greenhouse and then towards a forest, but that's all she could tell me." Frey sighed softly, wishing again that the Star Dragon Sword was still present--he had no doubt kept track at least a little better on that excursion.

Takaya nodded. "Want to give it a shot tonight or what?" Takaya didn't mind heading over the wall, but he wasn't sure they were really ready for a trek through the forest.

The idea of doing something that Kagetora wanted bothered him, but weighed against the idea of not doing anything .... no contest.

Shito was wrapping the last bit of shredded bedsheet around his arm and tying it off at the shoulder when the intercom changed and the doors unlocked. He felt the handcuff spring into existance around his wrist and had to hold back a sigh of relief--Akatsuki was still out there somewhere, and they were still bound by the link between their right hands. Hopefully the other zombie was okay, and somehow getting by.

The bandages probably wouldn't hold well once Shito's arm started rotting--there hadn't been all that much flesh left on it when it had changed last night, so the bandages would become quite loose--but it was better than doing nothing at all and just letting everyone see what his arm became when he used his powers. It still hurt, too, moving his arm, and especially re-doing the bandages. Shito was pale and sweating by the time it was all done, and had to take just a moment to catch his breath.

Hopefully Homura wouldn't make too much of it. "I'll be out of here in a moment."

"Of course." Homura remembered well the effects of the experimentation, and because of that, he didn't rush Shito. Yet at the same time, he also knew that it was important to Okita that he meet the person--Sen, no doubt--alone. That was the cause for Homura's relief when Shito left the room shortly thereafter, and the demi-god occupied himself by changing into his normal clothes ( ... )

[from here]

Himura's friends were gathered outside of his room still as Ayumu passed by; she had no worry about being spotted by Robin, but was fairly certain that Himura at the least would realize someone was there even if he didn't see her. As long as he didn't get a good look, though, that should be sufficient for her purposes ( ... )

Homura looked up when the door-knob turned, and grinned when he saw a familiar face. Sen it was, and he nodded in reply to her greeting. "Good evening. I'm going to guess Okita will be along in a few minutes." Like the pair, Homura had seen Kenshin's notice on the bulletin about his new room. It explained why they weren't traveling together, since no doubt neither of them wanted to be seen by the man. Considering their connection, Homura had no doubt that Kenshin was as much an enemy to Sen as he was to Okita.

Which led, of course, to an obvious question. He decided to wait, however, for the third member of the group to arrive. Since there hadn't been any sounds of fighting or panic in the hall during the brief period the door had been open, Homura thought it safe to assume that Sen hadn't actually attacked Himura or his friends.

"There's no one here but us, obviously." Homura doubted he needed to say so, but there was no harm in it. "So you can talk freely. I'd like to know how you know Okita, if you wouldn't mind."
