Day 38: Breakfast

Jan 06, 2009 16:02

What a singularly delightful evening he'd had. It was dampened, of course, by two things, but those were small things and he supposed he could overlook them for now. First was that his powers had still not returned. If he truly were on punishment as he thought, though, he couldn't very well expect those to come back. Second was that the little ( Read more... )

One of these days, Ed was going to find the Head Doctor and punch him with extreme prejudice. String him up somewhere and leave him for his own monsters to gnaw on for a while. The alchemist was more than a little annoyed at nightshift ending so quickly when he hadn't even made it to Adel's room.

He'd stormed after the nurse when she came to get him and had snatched the plate off her when she offered it. Like he couldn't pick up his own plate. He'd snarled at her when she'd given him a disapproving look for how much food he was packing onto the plate and then went to sit down, tearing into breakfast as though it would be his last.

Last night, Fox had accomplished nothing. He didn't remember leaving his room, but he didn't remember falling asleep either. Of course, he'd been lying down for a while after he'd finished eating, so perhaps he had simply fallen asleep without realizing it.

That did make the most sense, but Fox would not have been surprised to learn that he had gone out last night, and that his memory had been tampered with. That thought was very disturbing, and Fox tried not to dwell on it as he ate breakfast.

There was no sign of Lyta... perhaps she was just out the way that he himself had been for a few days. It felt like desperate hope, but he didn't want to contemplate having lost her as well. Fox took a seat next to Ed, who looked like he was upset about last night as well.

Ed looked up sharply from his meal when he noticed someone approaching, but managed a weak smile when he recognised Fox. "Morning," he said, sounding more tired than normal, not to mention rather grumpy. Not that he was ever at his best in the mornings, but he usually managed to sound at least a bit cheerful when talking to friends.

"How did your night go?" Fox was almost dreading the answer, worried that he would hear more news about people dying. There was enough talk of that on the bulletin board.

Fox wanted to be there for Ed, though. He could do that much, at least.

Indy woke with a start so sharp he almost fell out of bed. He was startled because he'd woken up. Just a second ago he'd been talking to Pierson, about to head back here, but he couldn't remember actually going. Even if he accepted that he'd forgotten the walk back--which he didn't, since he remembered the rest of the night clearly--he couldn't figure out how the hell changing back into his yellow-face uniform or rebandaging his injuries could have slipped his mind. He'd done a hell of a job on these wrappings, too, certainly more professional than his field-trained hands had ever managed before ( ... )

Kratos was used to suddenly waking up in bed by now, but he'd never drifted off with something still left to do. He'd been just about to leave for M22 per request when things had faded. It was irritating to leave business dangling like that, but he had said that there was a chance no one would be able to head over, so perhaps there was some leeway there.

The nurse arrived to escort him to the cafeteria, and as usual Kratos tuned her out as they continued down the hallway. He waved blankly in her direction before disappearing into the breakfast line; it was a dismal attempt at being "sociable".

Breakfast in hand, Kratos sat down at one of the tables. He'd forgotten that there had been new patients the other day, but now that he'd taken a look around he could pick out a few faces he'd never seen. Like the man standing nearby.

Considering the circumstances (being kidnapped, transported to an insane-asylum-cum-government-conspiracy-occult-testing-site(?) complete with bugs from hell, and, as far as he could tell, knocked out again during the night), Indy wasn't expecting a lot from breakfast.

Luckily, he was wrong on that score. The eggs and sausage were a sight for sore eyes, and the archaeologist loaded his tray with gusto. Breaking fast in the lion's den wasn't exactly his ideal way to spend a morning, but Indy was suddenly so hungry he would cheerfully have downed anything short of rat poison. Better keep his strength up, anyway.

Having claimed his treasure, Indy looked around for a table. He was about to sit alone when he noticed someone watching him--a redheaded man; Indy put him at about Pierson's age. Well, what the hell. The more he could learn from other patients, the better. He steered himself over and sat opposite the guy. "Good morning," he said simply, and attacked his eggs.

Hm, now this was unexpected. Still, it never hurt to meet more people, terrible at it though he was. He could safely say that he was slightly better at it now, though: necessity forced progress, after all.

"Good morning." Kratos repeated the greeting before taking a bite of his sausage. He was a light eater, so it was an interesting juxtaposition, watching the other man dig into his breakfast with such voracity.

Silence was golden, but not when it was awkward. He figured he might as well take the initiative for once, and so asked tentatively, "Are you new here?" He might as well test his observational skills; if his assumption was wrong, well, it would be to no detriment. A simple error of judgment, that would be all, easily attributed to the large number of patients within the Institute...

Siegfried wasn’t sure if he liked this morning mealtime or not. On one hand it meant a return to Landel’s complete control. On the other, it meant food and Siegfried was well aware that he had not eaten properly for some time.

Clearly his nurse was also aware of this and when she handed over a tray it was piled full of food. She gave Siegfried a warning look before she left him alone to eat.

Morning came, and the former defense attorney awoke in the usual abrupt fashion. Though the chime of the intercom contained a voice one normally could not associate with the Head Doctor, Kristoph paid little mind, choosing instead to search his arms ( ... )

Siegfried had just begun to eat his breakfast when he noticed a hand place itself on a nearby chair and then someone started to speak. When he realised that the person was speaking to him, he looked up towards the stranger.

“No, go ahead, sit down,” he said, gesturing to the chair. He would have been content to eat alone, but it was very difficult to avoid people in this place considering how many patients there were.

"Thank you." Satisfied, Kristoph took over the aforementioned seat, the now meal companion momentarily forgotten.

Rather than eating his breakfast, however, the man occasionally poked at the plate's contents with his fork. His thoughts ran back to the dilemma from the night before, opting to churn possible solutions multiple times over in his head. Something had to fix this mess without leaving lasting consequences...but what?

He suddenly turned a head toward the other man, as though realizing he had been neglecting him. "Is the morning treating you well?" he asked lightly.

Meche was still listless when she woke up; another good night's sleep clearly hadn't done much for her mood. She weighed the pros (breakfast) and cons (everything else) of getting up--without any strong impetus (like Domino!) driving her and without having seen Manny since their first night, her bed seemed like a perfectly reasonable place to spend the day.

She was resettling herself under the covers when the nurse entered. "Rise and shine, María!" the woman called cheerfully. "No more moping around. The more important part of your treatment is to get out there and socialize with the other patients."

"I just don't have the patience today," Meche snapped back. Weak pun, but she wasn't exactly having a humor-filled week here.

"Nonsense. Come on, let's go," was the unperturbed response.

It was clear that her options were go willingly or go by force, and one of them was a lot less likely to mess up her hair than the other. Besides, she was hungry. Being alive could take a lot out of a girl. "All right," she agreed, perhaps not as ( ... )

[Have a gambler?]

Between yesterday afternoon and this morning, it was a wonder that Kaiji didn't singlehandedly bring about the apocalypse. In the span of a day, he had not only been in a good mood for once thanks to Brook, but he had also been able to sleep relatively calmly at night. Perhaps the most unlikely thing of all was what Kaiji hadn't done, though. Waking up to a practically robotic-sounding woman's voice over the intercom riled him less than hearing a gratingly enthusiastic man's, and as such Kaiji didn't start the day by barking a string of profanities at the ceiling ( ... )

Meche was still eating mechanically when an unexpected voice almost made her jump out of her skin (easier than it used to be, she thought wryly). She looked up to see a young man at the table--a little rough-looking, but apparently trying to be friendly. She realized a beat later that he'd greeted her.

"Oh, hello," she replied, trying to muster a smile. "Sorry, I was just a little...preoccupied. Please have a seat." She was going to do her best to be civil if it killed her. After all, it wasn't his fault that she was trapped here and Manny was missing and Domino was back and everyone kept telling her she was going to get eaten by a monster.

Okay, maybe thinking of it that way wasn't helping either.

Kaiji was going to have a seat whether the woman gave him permission or not (unless she explicitly told him to get the hell away from her), but the invitation let him know that at the very least she was willing to tolerate his presence. That was good: Kaiji tended to try to be softer around women than he acted in the presence of other men. In any case, he didn't want to be a burden.

"Preoccupied?" Kaiji echoed back with a hint of curiosity in his voice. That was before the obvious smacked him. Of course she was preoccupied. This time was designated for eating, not for bothering the first person you happened to notice. "Oh, no, you don't have to," he seemed a bit flustered, "I mean, don't worry about it." Everyone here already had enough to worry about as it was ( ... )

[free]And just like that, Methos found himself jolting awake, with no idea how he'd gone from conversing with Jones in the upper hall to lying abed. It was by far more eerie than the previous morning; this time he'd been on guard for anything seemingly amiss, and still he hadn't registered being knocked out and moved ( ... )

Honey was a little bit disappointed that the phones hadn't worked, but Takashi had a point. They should probably try again during the day, it was just a matter of putting together a plan. And knowing the Host Club, putting together something like that should be as easy as... well... cake.

And speaking of cake, he noticed that there was a distinct lack of it again this morning. With a sigh he picked up some fruit and some of the pigs in blankets, which were actually cute and tasty with syrup. Not cake, but close at least.

That done, he looked around, but it didn't look like there was anyone to sit with yet. One of the twins was near the door, but he was being stubborn and not sitting down or getting food just yet. Looking around, he picked a table at random and sat, smiling up at his tablemate, tray in one hand, large pink stuffed rabbit in the other. When he sat at the table, his head and shoulders barely peeked up over the edge.

"Good morning!" he chirped happily. Maybe this person would actually be nice to talk to.

Methos glanced over at his tablemate, eyebrows rising as he took in both the boy's stature and the stuffed rabbit. Another kid hauling around a toy. He wondered if it was something about the age group, or particular to the kids incarcerated in the hospital. The latter seemed more likely, but it had been a while since he'd last paid much attention to many people quite so young as some of the patients seemed to be.

He nodded politely, offering an even, pleasant, "Good morning." Common civility couldn't do any harm; at least, the boy didn't look like the sort of asylum patient who needed to be handled with the same care given to nuclear devices.

Honey's smile widened when the man greeted him so nicely. He'd picked a good table then!

"My name is Haninozuka Mitsukuni, but you can just call me Honey for short. This is Usa-chan," he sat the rabbit on the edge of the table, facing the man with its large black button eyes. It left his hands free to messily eat the fruit and pigs in blankets.

"What's your name?"
