Day 36: Intercom, Evening

Oct 25, 2008 03:05

The intercom's jingle rang out and the somewhat uninhibited movement that was going on between the main activity rooms halted as the Head Doctor made one of his usual announcements ( Read more... )

What a boring day this had been.

Callisto actually yawned as she walked into her room, though she wasn't particularly tired. It was more a sign of lack of stimulation than anything. Dinner did look promising, though. Nothing like a nice slab of meat to get the night started off on the right foot.

But what to do tonight? As one of only five people, as far as she knew, that could access the area she really wanted to get to, she was going to have to regroup with patients that were clearly not fond of her by now or set out on her own. She wouldn't mind the latter if she was better equipped, but for now... Well, she supposed that was a bridge she'd have to cross when she got to it.

His visitor left ZEX drained and deeply depressed, to the extent where he could not find the energy to move himself when the nurses told him it was time to go. They eventually took his arm and supported him as they lead him back to his room, and ZEX could barely find the presence of mind to walk in a straight line. He leaned on her heavily, lost in thought over the entire experience.

"Don't worry, he'll be back next week, Max. It'll be alright," she tried to make him feel better, but ZEX wasn't listening.

When in his room, he slumped down in his chair and rested his head against his desk, and didn't move when she brought him his food. He opened his journal, wrote a few words then just let his hand collapse. Every now and then, he made a brief attempt to eat something, a piece of broccoli here and there. Over time even that was too much for him, and he just stopped moving entirely, head buried in his arms.

ZEX wanted to go home.

There was much buzzing in the halls about 'visitors' or 'guests'; from what Kunzite could piece together from the fragments of conversation, Landel and his staff somehow brought the 'patients' individuals whom they recognized from their original worlds. "No doubt some other form of hypnotic suggestion," he muttered under his breath, passing it off as jealous banter when questioned by the nurse escorting him to his room. His roommate was already inside, presumably resting from a long, exhaustive day. The swordsman sat on his bed, removing his notebook from the back pocket to jot down some observations on the day ( ... )

ZEX was deeply lost in his thoughts, trying to separate fact from fiction and continually failing. Even thoughts that normally comforted him, memories of Cerenkov and his menagerie, now only made the sick feeling worse. How could it all have been a lie? Was it all a lie?

Someone was talking to him. He didn't recognize their voice, and he couldn't find the energy to lift his head to look. He tried for a few seconds to sort through what they'd asked him, and to think of something to say.

"Medical treatment would not help," ZEX eventually said, although he wasn't very satisfied with that as a response. He tried for a moment to think of something better, then found the entire exercise pointless and returned to replaying his encounter with DAX over and over again.

"I see," Kunzite said quietly, backing away and taking the seat at his desk. "If you wish to speak of your troubles, I am available if you need any form of assistance."

For some reason, concern for his roommate had overcome the swordsman, and though he now turned to ravenously devouring his meal - the plastic knife removing abnormally large chunks of steak which were then greedily ingested - he kept Zex's state in the back of his mind. Clearly, he is deeply despondent, Kunzite thought to himself, curious as to what the cause of his malady was but not so callous as to ask him outright. I've offered to listen to his woes, if he so wishes to communicate them...once more, Master, I find myself replaying the roles I had with you. Perhaps now I shall not fail them...

By the time dinner rolled around, the sedatives had all but worn off. The chef laid back on his bed and stared at the ceiling, uncharacteristically ignoring his dinner as it was brought for him. He knew he should eat it, since he hadn't gotten brunch, and he would... once he could force himself to.

Nami was gone. Released, they said. He told himself it had to be a better setting than what she'd been in here. It had to be, or he'd kill someone.

He had to focus on other things. Like getting out of here. If he continued to mope around he wasn't going to be of any use to his crew - and they'd need him even more now that their navigator was gone.

The blond turned his head in Light's direction, watching him silently for a moment. The man reminded him of Misa, who, come to think of it, he hadn't seen much of either lately. There was another issue to deal with eventually. not now, though.

With a sigh, he sat up and turned so that he was sitting on the edge of the bed. Now that his roommate was around he might as well eat his dinner. He didn't need any commentary on his mood.

"Navigator went home," was all he said.

Finally a meal that looked worthy enough to attempt eating.

Scar immediately began on his steak after entering his room. Though it wasn't as good as the zebras back home, it was certainly much better than anything else these hairless apes came up with. It was no surprise that he outright ignored the fries and vegetables, and only spared a glance at the dessert after he had finished the meat.

Not touching it for now, he began looking for his light stick and his 'weapon', mostly for the lack of having anything else to do. He hadn't so much as exchanged a word with his roommate, whoever that man might be, and he supposed tonight wouldn't be too different in that regard.

Even in his somewhat clumsy state, finding the items hadn't taken all that long. With an annoyed sigh he seated himself on his bed and waited for the doors to unlock. Scar had never been renown for his patience, after all.

Plans were a good thing, and Matt was glad to have them. He hadn't asked for Kenshin's room number, but he hadn't forgotten it from the other night. It meant he'd have to be the one doing the walking, but the red-head was the injured one and there were certain rules of politeness it would be best for him to follow if he was going to get the other man to help him out.

He started on his steak with gusto. The energy would be needed, most likely. Unlike Mello, who'd been worried that Sai would go too easy on him, Matt was rather hoping this would be the case with Kenshin. It was counterproductive thinking, but... Matt was fragile.
