Haku was glad to come upon a fairly empty street. His ribs were aching and he wanted to find a place to rest for a moment. He checked his pulse and frowned at it's pace. Too fast, he was tired? From walking around?

This was ridiculous.

He leaned up against a wall and placed his arms gently over his stomach, closing his eyes.

Haku's smile changed slightly. "It's not about the amount of information, it's the quality."

And Haku was a very good judge.

Jack scratched his chin. "So if I told you I knew a guy who had the master list of all us patients, what would you say?"

He cocked his head. "Surely that would be worth a pack."

Haku shook his head. "Two things are wrong with that," he said. "First, simply saying that you have information does not egual giving information. Second, something like that would be useless if it were true."

He smiled. "But it's good to see you're catching on."

Jack stroked his stubble. "I found some chick's diary yesterday..."

Sure, he still wanted to screw her, whoever she was, but she had stood him up. The sleep had been nice and revitalizing, but Jack would have preferred company. And she hadn't exactly sought him out to get her journal back...

Haku brought up a hand and laughed softly behind it. "No thank you," he said. "If the diary is of any worth, I doubt it would be something just left in the open, and if it were, the person would just as easily tell me whatever I wanted to know."

He smiled. "Any payment you would get from me though would have to wait until we returned to the hospital. Ah," he seemed to have remembered something. "Try not to get those taken from you," he added. "I won't replace what you lose."

"Ha!" The Fable smirked. "That's where you're wrong. It wasn't out in the open! I had to root around in her stuff to find it."

Well, now that he had established himself as a thief, maybe Haku wouldn't be as forthcoming with those smokes. Then again, he doubted it would have any impact on the ninja's opinion of him.

Haku laughed again.

"I take it she wasn't there either?" He shook his head. "Child's play. Anyone who gathers information as a trade knows that to write things down where people you don't want to see it CAN see it is foolish and a waste of time." He leaned back against the wall and placed his arms over his stomach, gently holding his sides.

"I am not interested."

"No, she wasn't," glowered the Fable. "And she promised me hot lesbian sex too. A small comfort after the hell you put ME through. But I got her diary so I think I made out pretty well. Women are so emotional and write all their weepy thoughts in those things." Granted, the diary he had seemed to be a bit light on the weepy and a bit strong on the bitter. Not a point he needed to bring to light here.

"And if you're not interested, then I give up." He threw his hands up. "I'll just shoplift some when I get to the next town."

Haku smiled serenely. "I'm sure you have other things to offer and are more capable than others here think you are."

He closed his eyes. "When you are returned to the hospital, let me know if you're interested in an .... agreement of sorts. I would be happy to work with you, despite our past... history."

Jack cocked his head. "I can assure you, I have nothing of interest short of unused coupons and diaries. I suppose I've not got my thumb on the pulse of the Landels patient trends." Not that he wanted to; most of the losers here pissed him off and didn't recognize how AWESOME he was. "Though if there's something you want, I can see if I can't get it..."

Haku shrugged slightly. "I'm sure you have more than mere material goods. I've told you what I want and what I'm willing to give in return for it."

Jack was perplexed. "Uhhhh...More than material? Like what? I just told you, I don't know anything about anyone, really. I've been keeping my head down and staying out of the way."

.....sort of. But Jack wasn't going to bring up his solicitations on the bulletin board.

Haku laughed out loud at that. It hurt his sides, but he couldn't help it.

"Sir, you aren't capable of keeping your head down or staying out of anyone's way."

Jack narrowed his eyes. "Hey, that's not very nice to say."

Whatever, if Haku was going to ask for intangible and cryptic things, there was nothing the Fable could do except maybe wait until the evening and rob him blind. Actually, he rather liked that idea, though he'd need help...

Haku smiled and shrugged slightly. "I'm saying that you are too .... you are larger than life." Feeding the ego. "People notice you so it's hard for you to just blend in. If that's an insult, then I'm sorry to have offended you."
