Day 28: Magnus Park

Oct 31, 2007 11:16

When the bus had lurched to life, Okita was barely able to contain his scream of terror. He was lucky no one was sitting next to him or he would have died of embarrassment at his actions. Never having seen or even been in a modern transportation vehicle, he spent most of the trip curled up in his seat, gripping it like it was his only lifeline. ( Read more... )

"Just like being back in Central Park."

Nadine had spent most of the bus ride dozing off, her head against the window. It was nice to have normal clothes again, and she was glad for the thick green jacket over her white blouse and the matching skirt. It was cold. Or cold for someone who'd just been in the desert the last time she was outside.

So this was the town. It looked like a million other towns she'd seen on TV. Nothing special. Hands in her pockets, Nadine headed off into the park, looking for a bench or something to eat her breakfast.

Maybe for a day she could pretend everything was normal.

Though not at all used to the motion of cars either, Homura wasn't so unsteady--or rather, he refused to be. Breakfast and book in hand, the man moved off the bus, a single person in mind. Thankfully, timing was on his side, and the demi-god had been able to follow his target.

To say Okita's actions the night before had worried him was an understatement; Homura had little doubt that only the end of night had prevented their swords from clashing. Homura needed to ensure that Okita could handle his loss calmly, to do all he could for the man to ensure no harm came to their overall goal.

Not to mention the other patients.

Homura followed Okita for several minutes, not bothering to hide his presence. Okita should have been aware of it anyway. He waited until they were alone, then closed the distance between himself and the swordsman, speaking quietly.

"It's rather peaceful here."

Okita glanced up as he felt someone approaching and almost wished he hadn't. While Homura was usually a welcome sight, today of all days Okita didn't want to meet him. Forcing a smile effortlessly onto his face, he kicked off the ground and set himself swinging properly. "It is, isn't it?"

Homura had seen his weakness, seen the demon emerge at the worst possible moment. There was caution in the way Okita addressed him, and a certain poignancy in his refusal to acknowledge the previous night. "It's nice to be outside again, even if these play things are foreign."

Homura nodded slightly, idly watching Okita's body move through the air. Foreign, but Okita seemed to have found the purpose for that particular piece of equipment. Another piece of mortal ingenuity, designed strictly for entertainment according to what Okita had said.

A way to make the most of every precious moment.

But there was the matter that couldn't be ignored, and while he didn't want to isolate Okita, Homura had his own interests to look after. There were so many reasons he couldn't let Okita run wild in his grief, especially if last night was any indication. Homura could defend himself against the man; others could not.

"What are you planning on doing, Okita?"

Clark felt a surge of relief as he stepped off the bus. This part didn't look like any specific park he'd been to before, but it didn't need to; it felt familiar, which was the important part, and anyway, it felt good to actually see real outdoors instead of the halls of the Institute. Just as good as it felt to be in real, normal clothes - he didn't mind plaid, honestly, and he'd always felt more comfortable in the rough work shirts than anything fancy.

Where to go? You could escape, Clark thought. It'd be so easy, just take off at his version of a brisk jog - which, according to his parents, was almost too fast for them to follow - and head off to get some help. But he decided against it. First, leaving all these people just left a bad taste in his mouth. And second, he had no idea where he was, what direction to go to, and if it was possible they could be monitoring him for anything "abnormal". Better to play it safe and take a look around before he started using his powers. Just because he didn't see anyone watching didn't mean ( ... )

Well, that bus ride had been amazingly boring on about twelve different levels. At least the staff had given them something to eat. Food was a better distraction than staring out the window at passing trees. Yuffie could only stand so much tree-watching before crumpling up her paper bag and pegging one of the nurses sounded like a good idea.

What sounded like a better idea was putting those stupid smiley shirts back on. Even those awful things were way better than this! Tight navy blue cotton pants under a short white skirt with a lighter blue long-sleeved shirt. They were making her wear girl clothes. Second-hand and kinda worn-out girl clothes, at that. And let's not forget the cute jean jacket they'd given her that looked like a good strong breeze might just blow through it ( ... )

Reno caught Yuffie right about when he stepped off the bus. Probably because she was in a skirt and he didn't think he'd ever seen her in a skirt in his life. Of course, he'd also never seen her that much, period, but that wasn't the point.

He sighed inwardly. He supposed he did owe her...something. Of sorts. For last night. For jumping her. And the entirety of AVALANCHE had come along when they didn't have to. Reno had been too distracted last night to be surprised by it then, but upon reflection, it was wholly unexpected.

Well, anyway. Wasn't like he had anything to lose.

"Hey," he said, walking up to her. He ran a hand through his hair, pausing for a moment. "I, uh. I was gonna say something about last night, but now that I think about it, it'd just be...sorta awkward. And I'm not gonna lie. You were pushing your luck pretty damn hard back there."

Yuffie turned sharply upon hearing that voice, surprised that he was calling out to her of all people. Just in case, she made a quick check behind her. Nope, no one. Great.

"What?" she answered to the call, very conscious of the fact that she was dressed so girly. So help me, if he makes one comment, I'm going to land my heel square in his-

What came out of Reno's mouth next made Yuffie wonder if the Turk had hit his head or something. What was he trying to say about last night? What would a Turk find awkward? They'd all done some pretty strange things last night...

"Yeah, sure, whatever," Yuffie muttered, avoiding eye contact. She had been trying a little harder to piss Reno off last night, especially after the first time she'd been attacked for saying practically nothing. Was he trying to apologize for that or something? No, that was a stupid thought ( ... )

Well, okay. Reno supposed that went as well as could be expected. Better, actually.

His side of the alliance? He paused. Damned if he knew. So far, so good, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something had happened to Rufus. Elena was probably okay; he was pretty sure one bite wouldn't take her out or anything, but he'd check up on her later. If he could even find her. Christ, he'd thought it was hard to find people in the Institute usually - this was impossible with a town this large.

In the end, he shrugged a shoulder and leaned back against a tree. "Nobody died," he replied dryly. "Suppose yours are in one piece, too?"

He could see Wallace not too far off in the park, at least. With that really hot chick Reno had run into once.

Well, wasn't this interesting. Citan adjusted his glasses as he stepped down onto the sidewalk. He'd been given a hair tie, at least, to pull his long black hair into a ponytail. And he felt that the brown button down shirt and black canvas pants were rather fetching, in a very bland sort of way. Yui would probably tease him about them, if she could see him.

He stepped off into the park, out of the way of the crowd, eying the packet of vouchers in his hand. None of them seemed particularly useful - he certainly didn't need a manicure or a facial, and he'd only really enjoy a massage if it happened to come from a young and seductively clothed woman. Preferably his wife.

He'd use the food ones when he was hungry. Maybe he could trade the others...

And perhaps he could find some useful tools or mechanics about!

[From here]The pint-sized guardian spent a good long time scouring the area for even the slightest hint of the white hair that had been described to her. After circling the buses numerous times, it became clear that the person she was searching for simply wasn't there. Then again, hadn't the man said Kadaj intended to go somewhere quiet? There was still a bit of a crowd around the buses... if he had come this way, he must have gone into the park ( ... )

It was easy enough look startled when he was approached by a young girl, starting and blinking as though he'd been deep in thought.

"Hmm? Oh! I'm quite sorry, I haven't seen anyone matching that description."

Citan offered the girl a smile, looking rather bemused and a bit distracted. It was a look he'd perfected over the years. Absent-minded and harmless.

"But I must admit, I haven't been paying all that much attention. The flora in this area is quite fascinating."

What kind of person would find plants more interesting than all the other things there were to see around here? One thing was certain, at least: Anise was having bad luck with men today. Even if she found that Kadaj guy now, it would probably just lead to more headaches!

She gave a short, shallow sigh, which sounded far less exasperated than she was feeling. "He's probably long gone... I should just give up on looking for him already." It was frustrating to think of all the time she had just wasted for nothing, but it was better to give up and do something else than to let the rest of the day go to waste, too.

Speaking of wasted time, how could this guy just stand around when there was so much to see in town? "Is it really that interesting?" she asked, rather dubiously.
