There were no patients in the stairwell. Going down at the beginning of the night, for once, he had the high ground, so Indy slowed his pace at the top to listen for anything else that might be there before he started the descent. It was slow going--luckily his legs were almost uninjured, but the constant waves of pain in his chest and back prevented him from moving too quickly, and he still couldn't use his left hand to steady himself. But the lack of traffic meant he could take his time, and in a minute or two he had reached the ground floor and was ready to keep going into the main hall.
