No danger in the hallways, as usual. Lunge barely gave it more than a cursory glance as they turned into the main corridor, even if he kept his voice relatively low. "On that front there will probably be more than enough patients there to see at least something of the effects caused by the drugs Aguilar mentioned."

Stated so plainly it sounded almost heartless, as though they would be taking the side of the Institute's scientists and doctors in watching indifferent from a distance, but it was nonetheless the most sensible option for them. Besides, they couldn't control the actions of their fellow prisoners; if they wanted to take the risk, so be it.

L walked alongside Lunge, moving at a good speed, but when they reached the door to the larger hall, he paused and peered to both the left and the right before taking a right turn and resuming his brisk pace.

For most of his life, he had managed to keep immediate physical danger at arm's length; it required consistent caution and that any risks he chose to take be calculated. Avoiding that kind of danger at Landel's was impossible, if he wanted to put an end to the situation on his own terms rather than those of his captors. Still... if something attacked them from behind, he wouldn't have his own carelessness--or Lunge's, he thought, annoyed--to blame. The irritation passed as they proceeded without incident ( ... )
