No danger in the hallways, as usual. Lunge barely gave it more than a cursory glance as they turned into the main corridor, even if he kept his voice relatively low. Stated so plainly it sounded almost heartless, as though they would be taking the side of the Institute's scientists and doctors in watching indifferent from a distance, but it was nonetheless the most sensible option for them. Besides, they couldn't control the actions of their fellow prisoners; if they wanted to take the risk, so be it.

For most of his life, he had managed to keep immediate physical danger at arm's length; it required consistent caution and that any risks he chose to take be calculated. Avoiding that kind of danger at Landel's was impossible, if he wanted to put an end to the situation on his own terms rather than those of his captors. Still... if something attacked them from behind, he wouldn't have his own carelessness--or Lunge's, he thought, annoyed--to blame. The irritation passed as they proceeded without incident ( ... )
