Day 56: Bill's Hardware (Late Afternoon)

May 16, 2011 09:58

The day had gone by surprisingly fast. Guy could hardly believe that it was drawing toward an end, but the fact that he'd run into Natalia against all odds was probably what contributed to that. Still, he'd made one purchase, caught up with her at least somewhat, and had lunch, so Guy was set for the most part. The last thing that he wanted to do ( Read more... )

While Rita's day hadn't been ideally productive, she'd come across some potentially useful items during the trip. The magnifying lens she'd just purchased was tucked into Rita's coat pocket, and she was careful not to put it next to anything that could scratch the glass ( ... )

It was a shame that Guy's funds were limited, since some of these adhesives would have likely helped him with putting together his sheath. He sighed, knowing that he had gotten the largest amount of funds possible, and yet even then it didn't feel like enough. It might have been because he'd come up with an ambitious idea, but that was just his way ( ... )

A sheath, huh? Looking at Guy, it wasn't a surprise that he was a swordsman... though maybe that was just because of his resemblance to Flynn ( ... )

The fact that Rita had gone from having an interest in heraldry to being able to cast spells with it in the space of a few days was truly impressive. This wasn't the first time that Rita had shocked Guy with her prowess when it came to knowledge of energy sources, though. It sounded like that skill extended to her ability to use it as well as study it ( ... )

Having already spent the morning in the electronics store looking around for possible useful supplies, followed by lunch with Peter, Brainiac 5 headed over for the hardware store as the next location that could yield something useful. While he didn't think that there would be many tools he was actually familiar with, there could still be something useful.

Unfortunately he realised not long after he arrived that there was even less than he'd hoped available, and much of what was potentially worthwhile was decided out of his price range. He sighed, resigning himself to another hour or so of browsing through everything in the hopes that there would be something his initial search had missed, but ultimately being disappointed ( ... )

The day was wearing on, and the Doctor still hadn't spent the full sum of the money he'd been given-and he definitely wasn't going to let that money go unused. He'd been looking around for various odds and ends and useful bits, and the hardware store was his next stop.

At the very least, it would be nice to get a bag of some sort; he'd thought about it earlier that day, and the idea was definitely growing on him. Of course, it depending on whether he could find one that was reasonably priced-and by 'reasonably priced', he only meant that he could afford it with however much was left on his card. (What was a reasonable price for a bag in this year, anyway?) If he couldn't find one he could afford, then he would just buy all the odds and bobs he could ( ... )

At the sound of his name, the Coluan spun around to pick out a familiar face, a smile of his own coming to life immediately as the Doctor approached.

"I was wondering if I'd see you around town today," he said when the Time Lord was close enough. He hadn't been sure if his friend would be alone, though, as Peter had been, so Brainiac 5's gaze flicked to behind the Doctor briefly just to make sure that he wasn't with someone else at the time. Like that Donna woman.

Once it was apparent that it was just the two of them, he relaxed and his smile widened. "I was going to see if there was anything worth getting in here, since we have some currency now. Is that what you're here for as well?"

Then again, maybe the questioning about last night could wait. Brainiac 5 was in much better shape than the Doctor had feared he'd find the Coluan in, so some of his worries had been put to rest just at the sight of him. Nevertheless, the Doctor kept an eye on him as he turned towards one of the shelves, continuing to inspect the boy from the sides of his eyes.

After a moment, he realized he hadn't yet answered Brainiac 5's question. "Yes; sorry," he said quickly, reaching out to take hold of the first thing he could... which turned out to be a mop. He wondered if he'd be allowed to take anything big back with him on the bus-ah, but something like a mop or a broom could be easily found back at the Institute, he supposed. He'd just have to find a janitor's closet ( ... )

Firo was in a dour mood.

Doyleton may have been the smallest town Firo had ever heard of, but honestly, it hadn't been that bad. It had been interesting-confusing, too, but... he hadn't disliked it on the whole. It still felt like he had more questions than answers about everything (both here and back at the prison), but he'd been allowed to walk around freely and talk to whomever he liked, so in that respect, it beat getting ordered back and forth by guards all day.

And then he'd gone to see the casino. He was surprised a town this small even had one (was everyone in town a regular?), but the sign of the "Crossroader's Bar and Casino" advertised it so openly that Firo couldn't help but want to have a look around. It was something like professional interest, or so he told himself.

But the people guarding the door refused to even let him in at first. When they finally had-only after checking his age on some list, he'd gone to the bar first. He wasn't going to actual gamble, but he didn't mind putting down a little money since ( ... )

After his lunch with Grell, Dexter had, true to the plans he'd told the redhead, headed straight for the hardware store to see what they had that might be useful for him and that he might not be able to find in the institute. Generally he found he preferred, almost needed having enough to complete his ritual, but he could leave off a few things if it came to that. He'd adapted before.

But even if he was already someone's prisoner, held under a false name he'd used that the FBI were still searching for, he couldn't relax. If anything, he needed to be more careful. The slightest slip up could give whoever was behind this place what they needed, with his next stop being a lethal injection.

He'd need to trust in Harry's teachings to keep him safe and hidden, now more than ever. And for those, he needed certain things.

Garbage bags I can get at the institute, there should be a place for them, along with other cleaning supplies. Duct tape there as well, and Grell's scalpels had to come from somewhere... Which leaves--He rounded a corner ( ... )

As he reached the end of the aisle, someone else rounded the corner... and unlike their past encounters, this time Dexter narrowly avoided another collision. That they had both managed to avoid each other raised Firo's spirits enough to clear the lingering frown from his face ( ... )

The smile and faint laugh came easily, the product of years of practice in playing the roles he'd taken on. Boyfriend, husband, family man... Some of them had become closer to the truth than even Dexter had realised until it was too late. Not that he would have changed any of them. But this, this was... simple. Familiar and easy.

It was better this way if he wanted to find out more about what he'd seen that night before.

"Well, you know what they say about being prepared," he said. "Especially after last night."

[from here]

Stepping into the hardware store was something like a miniature culture shock for him: he'd never actually gone into this kind of shop before, had sort of assumed from the name what he would find within. Still, the sheer amount of things that this world managed to consider hardware was shocking. Several aisles, just crammed full of tools Kratos had never seen before, loose ends and bits whose uses he couldn't possible fathom: it was enough to make part of him wish he had thought to come and find this place earlier so he would have had more time to, well...explore.

The other part of him that was still somewhat lucid was sharply reminding him that he had to be making an utter fool out of himself in front of Honda, standing not more than a few steps away from the entrance, eyes wide and mouth slightly open. Granted, he was not fully the picture of complete shock - or awe, for that matter - but it was about as close as Kratos would ever come to either of those things ( ... )

Oh, thank goodness, he'd been right. As they'd walked down the street, Japan had begun doubting his choice. He was a bit old and this was his first time here in Doyleton. He wasn't sure where everything was yet and even after wandering around during the day, he still didn't. He had no GPS, no maps, no cell phone on which he could check their current position and the clouds in the sky made any sort of positioning difficult. But, all his fretting had been for nothing, for soon enough the store came into view.

It was smaller than home centers in his country, but it still had just about anything a person could need in a town this size. He supposed it would have to, considering the reality of this being the only store of its kind here. That was kind of sad to think about, actually. They were so far in the country that they only had a single town to rely upon for everything ( ... )

Similar to the earlier situation with Rapunzel, if Kratos had been aware of the sort of ideas he was inspiring, he would have definitely taken care to properly rein in his reactions. Unfortunately, he didn't have eyes on the back of his head, so he had no way of noticing the miniature frenzy he'd just induced. Which was probably for the best: he would have been completely mortified if he'd witnessed Honda's fanboying ( ... )
