With sigh that toed the ambiguous no-mans-land between soft and explosive, Yuffie collected a plateful of waffles with all the toppings. She was sure that, if nothing else, it'd making a pretty satisfying splat if-when?-she launched it at somebody's face, and that was all that counted

Of course, the fact that he was feeling rather groggy after waking this morning didn't help in pinpointing the difference... but at least it afforded a distraction from thinking about last night. It wasn't until he'd arrived at the cafeteria his nurse was shuffling him towards waffles that he realized what it was: for the first time in a long while, he could feel the existence of another Time Lord.
He'd pulled away from the nurse immediately, whirling around to look-really look-at the other patients. There was Dean, and there was Peter, and... No, no, it would have to be someone new, someone he hadn' ( ... )

He'd just lifted a piece towards his mouth when Peter swallowed and spoke. The Doctor let the fork hang in the air.
"Alright? Yes," he answered. Maybe he was decidedly a little less than alright because of last night and yesterday and the night before, but as long as he overlooked that... Then again, even if he was doing his best not to think about last night, the night before was a little harder to ignore. After a brief pause, he corrected, "Well, as 'alright' as can be expected-... Better than yesterday, certainly, if nothing else."
For Peter's part, it didn't look like the young man was feeling as down as they had both been when they met, or maybe he was just hiding it better this time. "And you? Feeling a little better as well, I hope ( ... )

"Of everything," he replied, one side of his mouth quirking upwards. "Or, well... nearly that."
He spent another moment cutting up his waffles, debating whether he should ask how Brainiac 5 was doing; if Peter knew that he'd seen a doctor last night, he might have a more detailed update about the boy's state. Before he'd finished deciding what to ask, however, Peter asked about Donna.
"I haven't seen her since yesterday," the Doctor said. "But she was... Well, she wasn't doing terribly well then, but I'm sure she's at least a little better today. She's... a very strong person. I know she'll pull through this alright, in the end, but ( ... )

He lifted another piece of the waffle to his mouth and chewed thoughtfully, thinking about what had been done to Donna. Yesterday he hadn't dared ask... though maybe that good old Donna Noble obstinacy would have reared its head if he had, and that would have been very welcome. "I can't say I'm completely sure what they did, but I have my suspicions," the Doctor said. "Her head and hands were bandaged-a bit like Brainiac 5-and she asked me if someone from Pompeii could be here. She wouldn't have asked that then without a reason, so I think it has something to do with it ( ... )

He paused to take a bite of his waffles. Once he'd swallowed he added, "But if you're trying to find out if I'm a medical doctor, that's one degree I never got."
The Doctor fell quiet again, reaching for his glass as he considered what had happened with Donna, both the other night and in Pompeii. From the cult... Yes, that a definite possibility, and the one he was leaning most strongly towards. But just as easily it might not have been. "It could be," he answered. "If not from the cult, than at least similar enough to make her think of it. The Sisterhood didn't try to experiment on Donna, but they did try to sacrifice her. Other than that, they were turning themselves to stone-well, into Pyroviles..."
Maybe it was that? No, no; couldn't have been... The ( ... )

Or the day the Doctor had caused the eruption, but he wasn't going to mention that. There was, however, one other very important detail he'd neglected to share, which might clear up Peter's confusion about his name, his 'job', and everything else... Or at least clear up the 'everything else' bit. "Just because I don't work in a- in a shop, or in an office, doesn't mean I don't do anything, Peter," he said with an amused smile. "I'm a time traveller... and you'd be hard-pressed to find a degree for that in one of your universities ( ... )

"It's hardly a 'paying career', but I don't have a need for money," the Doctor continued, answering Peter's other question. He paused and then added, "Well..... usually." When he did need it, he could just sonic whatever was most convenient and that was that. Usually. There were outlying cases, of course-some unintentionally extended stays during which funds had become necessary-but on the whole...
Well.
As for the matter of the Pyroviles... "Just because you didn't learn about the Pyrovile doesn't mean we're necessarily from different universes; we may be, but we may not be. There's quite a lot that never makes it into history class, Peter; what historians know about the 'ancient world' is an awful lot of guesswork ( ... )
