With sigh that toed the ambiguous no-mans-land between soft and explosive, Yuffie collected a plateful of waffles with all the toppings. She was sure that, if nothing else, it'd making a pretty satisfying splat if-when?-she launched it at somebody's face, and that was all that counted

He lifted another piece of the waffle to his mouth and chewed thoughtfully, thinking about what had been done to Donna. Yesterday he hadn't dared ask... though maybe that good old Donna Noble obstinacy would have reared its head if he had, and that would have been very welcome. "I can't say I'm completely sure what they did, but I have my suspicions," the Doctor said. "Her head and hands were bandaged-a bit like Brainiac 5-and she asked me if someone from Pompeii could be here. She wouldn't have asked that then without a reason, so I think it has something to do with it."
Donna had almost gotten killed in Pompeii-and the Sisterhood would have succeeded at it if he hadn't shown up in time. Had she just been thinking of being strapped down to that altar, or was it more? Had someone from the Sisterhood been involved, or else was it something to do with the Pyrovile? With Donna's bandaged hands...
"There was a cult in Pompeii, a- a sisterhood, the Sibylline Sisterhood," he clarified. He tapped at the back of one hand. "They had eyes painted on the back of their hands and they could see the future-well, one version of it, anyway. I suspect that whatever was done to Donna may be related to them."
It was one time he'd happily accept being wrong. He couldn't even make up his mind about whether to tell her about what was to come, and there was the possibility-however slight-that she might already know.
The Doctor was quiet for a long moment before commenting, "I hope that when Brainiac 5 decided to test his abilities-if he can't be dissuaded-he won't try it on his own. I'd feel a lot better if at least one of us is there."
Peter had tried to rescue Brainiac 5 before, and that was all the Doctor needed to know to trust that he would try to protect the Coluan from hurting himself if the Doctor wasn't there and the 'tests' went badly.

He paused to take a bite of his waffles. Once he'd swallowed he added, "But if you're trying to find out if I'm a medical doctor, that's one degree I never got."
The Doctor fell quiet again, reaching for his glass as he considered what had happened with Donna, both the other night and in Pompeii. From the cult... Yes, that a definite possibility, and the one he was leaning most strongly towards. But just as easily it might not have been. "It could be," he answered. "If not from the cult, than at least similar enough to make her think of it. The Sisterhood didn't try to experiment on Donna, but they did try to sacrifice her. Other than that, they were turning themselves to stone-well, into Pyroviles..."
Maybe it was that? No, no; couldn't have been... The Sisters had psychic abilities, sure, but turning slowly into stone in exchange could hardly be considered an 'upgrade' if that's what the doctors here intended with their experiments. But then again... It was certainly a questionable enough exchange that it could be...
Whatever it was that had been done, the Doctor already didn't like it.
"I think it might be best to try to delay-or try to delay-the tests Brainiac 5 wants to run. If it takes any kind of toll on him, it could be worse if he's still recovering from the surgery."

Or the day the Doctor had caused the eruption, but he wasn't going to mention that. There was, however, one other very important detail he'd neglected to share, which might clear up Peter's confusion about his name, his 'job', and everything else... Or at least clear up the 'everything else' bit. "Just because I don't work in a- in a shop, or in an office, doesn't mean I don't do anything, Peter," he said with an amused smile. "I'm a time traveller... and you'd be hard-pressed to find a degree for that in one of your universities."
Which brought him to his next answer. Peter was friends with Brainiac 5, so at least the concept of 'aliens' shouldn't be unfamiliar to him. "As for the Pyroviles, they're from the planet Pyrovilia. Rock-based humanoids; not that fond of water... Some of them had ended up on Earth and were living beneath Vesuvius."
He was glad to hear that Peter was going to try to talk to Brainiac 5 about the tests; maybe it would help if he heard it from multiple sources. Even better was that Peter was going to try to keep an eye on him. The last thing he wanted was for Brainiac 5 to decide he was going to do testing on his own... But the big question really was what, exactly, had been done to him.
"You may have a point about the operation, but... Well, I hope that you're right." It really depended on whether they had truly 'improved' Brainiac 5, or whether they were using him as some kind of test subject, like a lab rat.

"It's hardly a 'paying career', but I don't have a need for money," the Doctor continued, answering Peter's other question. He paused and then added, "Well..... usually." When he did need it, he could just sonic whatever was most convenient and that was that. Usually. There were outlying cases, of course-some unintentionally extended stays during which funds had become necessary-but on the whole...
Well.
As for the matter of the Pyroviles... "Just because you didn't learn about the Pyrovile doesn't mean we're necessarily from different universes; we may be, but we may not be. There's quite a lot that never makes it into history class, Peter; what historians know about the 'ancient world' is an awful lot of guesswork that's been pieced together into something resembling the whole. To be honest, I'd be more concerned if the Pyroviles were in your textbook."
With that he began once more to work on his waffles, but in the next moment the intercom came on with the sound of shuffling papers, followed by a woman announcing the next shift.
