Day 53: Breakfast

Nov 21, 2010 08:08

With sigh that toed the ambiguous no-mans-land between soft and explosive, Yuffie collected a plateful of waffles with all the toppings. She was sure that, if nothing else, it'd making a pretty satisfying splat if-when?-she launched it at somebody's face, and that was all that counted ( Read more... )

Claude jerked awake, taking in a ragged breath as he pushed himself out of bed. Immediately, his eyes went straight to his shadow, and he was relieved to find that it mimicked his shape and movements in the exact way a shadow ought to. Did that mean the marionette from last night was completely gone? Or was it watching him even now ( ... )

Guy woke with a start, even though night had ended right when he would have expected it to. While that should have been a comforting thought, it only proved that those shadow creatures had bothered them for as long as possible, bringing up as many unresolved issues as they could work into the conversation. And so the swordsman started the day off on the wrong foot ( ... )

As soon as he realized someone was approaching him, Claude looked up from his plate and was a little surprised to find Guy in front of him. Part of him had wondered if they'd wind up avoiding each other for awhile, but in the end Guy had decided to seek him out. As nervous as he felt about talking to him, Claude knew the longer they waited to face each other, the longer all the wounds opened last night would fester. He couldn't...no, wouldn't allow that to happen ( ... )

While it took Claude a split second longer than normal to respond, he still agreed to letting Guy sit there. It was hard to know if he was all that happy about it, but it didn't look like he was that annoyed just judging by his face. Guy knew there was a lot hidden behind those blue eyes, but he also realized that Claude was very much a wear-his-heart-on-his-sleeve type. Granted, there were a lot of things he never would have guessed about him, but still, he didn't think that the younger man was secretly cursing him or anything.

No, there was just a lot of tension. There was far too much to be addressed about the night before and no easy way to start. So with a small sigh, Guy took the seat (next to Claude, he noticed) and glanced down at his food for a moment. It remained as untouched as Claude's for now ( ... )

Claude patiently waited for him to take a seat, not making direct eye contact as he did so. It was hard to bring himself to look at him after some of the things that came to light last night. As he began to speak, however, he noticed the way his friend moved his hands, which only served to highlight how nervous he must have he felt about approaching him over this. He felt bad to see his friend worked up like that, but it was hard to know how to put him at ease when he was going through the same thing.

Really, they both had a lot they needed to explain after everything that had happened. There was nothing they could do except try to tackle all this one issue at a time, though.

Eyes still resting on Guy's hands, Claude silently listened to the apology, his expression unchanging. He was reminded of why he often felt like it was easier to avoid or remove himself from situations like these, where both parties were required to be uncomfortably candid with each other about something neither particularly wanted to discuss. He could ( ... )

As it turned out, Claude took in all of his words without really batting an eye. Whether that was because he was holding his emotions in or because he was trying to be understanding was hard to tell. It was strange, because Guy had felt like he could read Claude pretty well before all of this, but all of a sudden it was like he was on shaky ground again. Maybe it was better this way, to not assume anything, but he'd liked how comfortable they'd been around each other ( ... )

Claude tried to think back on that horrible night as little as possible. Some part of him had always wondered if Guy would have been able to win against Sync if he hadn't been used as his hostage, if Claude hadn't hesitated in his fight against Dias. Maybe that extra bit of strength would have been enough to keep Guy free of the curse slot. But, then...maybe it wouldn't have made a difference at all. There were too many factors to consider. Still, he hated to think the sight of Guy's twisted neck had somehow been inevitable. He also hated to know that he'd contributed to it, even if he wasn't sure if Guy saw it that way ( ... )

While Guy didn't see any reason that the curse slot would start hurting when it wasn't active, he understood what Claude was getting at and made sure to nod. More than that, the younger man had brought up something else that he needed to remember to do. "I've got to let them know that it's there at all. They're all familiar with how it works, but still... they should know of the possibility, too." Anise was his first priority, but Natalia would also need to know. Beyond that, he didn't know if the rest of his friends from Auldrant were even still around, and he didn't want to think on it for any longer than necessary. It was another thing to add to his to-do list, though. If he was going to be open with Claude, then he definitely needed to extend that courtesy to the people who he'd spent so much time with, who he'd saved Auldrant alongside ( ... )

So Guy hadn't told any of his Auldrant friends about the curse slot, either. He could understand his reasoning all too well, but he really did need to start being more open about those sorts of problems. So long as there was a small chance Sync could manipulate Guy into doing something he didn't want, people needed to be aware of it in case it happened. Friends were supposed to watch out for each other, right ( ... )

A bite or two wasn't much, but it was better than nothing and Guy was able to acknowledge that. He watched the way that his friend took a sip of his water and felt some relief at the sight. So long as he could still keep that much down, then chances were that he would be okay. Still, he really shouldn't have been running around in the woods last night if it had been on such an empty stomach. Guy sort of wished Claude had mentioned it earlier, but he also should have noticed. Well, he could keep an eye on him from now on ( ... )

No, it wasn't a good sign, but there were certainly worse things he could be contending with. That had been part of the reason why Claude didn't advertise his problem before this morning. For now, though, the only thing he could do was try to stay hydrated and make sure he didn't run himself into the ground. As if trying to keep that in mind, he reached for his cup again and took another drink of water as he thought over whether it'd be a good idea to ask the nurse for some pills.

"Maybe," he answered after a second of hesitation. It was one thing to accept pain medicine when it was offered, but another to go out of his way to ask for something to settle his stomach. Turning to the staff for too much helped didn't sit right with Claude. And anyway, who was to say they wouldn't just accuse him of making it up or something?

When Guy suddenly changed the subject again, he turned to look at him with a concerned expression. He hadn't expected him to bring up the Luke issue so suddenly, least of all now. Hearing his shadow accuse ( ... )

While Guy couldn't really blame Claude for being hesitant about that idea, it was still something to keep in mind, especially if his lack of appetite persisted for too much longer. Going a few days with little food was one thing, but if it started to extend into weeks, then Guy was going to have to put his foot down. If he found Natalia and they cornered Claude as a team, even better ( ... )

It sounded like Guy was set on having this talk right here and right now. Claude wasn't struggling with second thoughts, so much as he just wanted to make sure Guy was ready for what he was about to do. Not only that, but he'd been silent about other issues, like the memory loss from the basement, for a long time now. While before Claude might have assumed he just needed space about the matter, now he was starting to become worried that his friend was experiencing more symptoms and keeping it to himself ( ... )

There was a whole lot that had to be going through Claude's head right now, and some of it Guy could see plainly on his face: shock, concern, and a slow understanding. He was clearly shaken by the whole thing, but not to the point that he was looking away or faltering in any way. In fact, he said nothing at all for the moment, instead just seeming to be urging him to continue ( ... )

Claude instantly recognized Van's name. That was the man who'd tried to destroy Auldrant despite all of the connections he'd had with Guy and his friends. He'd already known that he'd been Luke's instructor, as well as Tear's brother. But Guy had neglected to mention his own relation to Van before now, and Claude supposed he could understand why. Still, it was pretty astounding to learn just how intertwined the Auldrantians here were, and Guy's story only highlighted that.

Things started getting a bit confusing when two Lukes entered the picture, but Claude did his best to follow along. Since he'd already figured out they were clones, he'd sort of been expecting something like that to come up sooner or later. He had to admit that hearing about Van's plan only raised questions of why he would take Asch's identity away by making a copy of him, but Claude got the impression that by itself was another complicated story on its own -- one that would likely shed more light on Asch's relationship with Guy and Luke ( ... )

It didn't really occur to Guy that what Claude said about dying loved ones could have come from personal experience. It was the sort of thing that anyone with common sense could acknowledge as true, after all, though that didn't mean that Guy could use that as an excuse for the things that he'd done. While it was true that he'd never actually harmed Luke (either one) or his father, the fact that he'd held that grudge for so long had practically left a dark mark on his heart ( ... )
