Further Doctor Who/"End of Time" discussion, now with added Medievalist geekery.

Jan 03, 2010 13:32

A lot of people have been speculating about the identity of a certain piece of armor to be seen in both segments of "End of Time." Naturally, since I play with the stuff on a regular basis, I was looking pretty carefully at both items ("oooh, shiny!"), and have organized a small compare'n'contrast picspam under the cut.

Spoilers, if you hadn't figured that out yet. )

history, doctor who, armor, geekery, gross speculation

Interesting lecture! I'd just rewatched "Everything Changes" to see if it was the same, but didn't notice half the differences you just mentioned. Thanks for that! And yeah, I'm still clinging to the idea that the Risen Mitten is still from Gallifrey and contemplating what that means with regard to Jack knowing exactly where to find its mate after Owen gets shot.

Heh. Given that I've been lusting after a pair of really nice finger gauntlets for years (for actual sparring use) but haven't been able to afford them, you can bet I started drooling and staring when both items came onscreen. Obsess much? Moi?

RE: Jack finding the second Mitten . . . well, he did have to ask Tarot Girl for a pointer, but once he had that he really did seem able to pinpoint its exact location easily. Definitely fun/interesting implications. :D

Ah, I'd forgotten about Tarot Girl. But yeah, still interesting to ponder.

Yeah, it's never named onscreen, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if the Gauntlet of Rassilon = the Hand. IIRC, the "Hand" in the Classic series wasn't actually hand-shaped (though I could be wrong, it's been a loooooooong while since I saw the relevant eps), but it's not an unreasonable way to reinterpret the device.

Interesting! I'd wondered about whether they were the same, and now I know. Also, LOL at "Fit of Pique of Rassilon." That goes along with the Flying Spittle of Rassilon.

Cool, that answers that question! Which hadn't actually occurred to me until I saw somebody else suggesting it...

"(Totally random sword-geek aside: in the context of the gauntlet, my brain keeps trying to process the swirly metal topper on the Staff of Rassilon as the swept hilt of a rapier or other late-Period sword design -- talk about a one-track mind! *facepalm*)"

Oh THANK GAWDS, I wasn't the only one doing that!!! Only I was thinking basket hilt... like the very first one here? http://images.google.com/images?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&source=hp&q=basket+hilt&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=IUpBS5C6KIbKsAOd66XDBA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBsQsAQwAA
