Geez, I haven't posted here for a couple of weeks; I’ve been so busy lately with finishing final projects and taking final exams that I haven’t had much time for anything else. Good God, I am so glad to get out of high school(I graduate on the 13th)! I’m ecstatic to see this wave of new people joining and to see that people are making new posts ( Read more... )

I agree with some parts, the other parts I shrug off by saying, "Eh, it's just entertainment." I'm always gonna like Tia, but she does have a touch of the "Magical Negro" about her. Heh.

I do agree with your touch of "Magical Negro" view.

But what redeems the characterization for me personally is that she ends up being a Goddess and her "helping" has ulterior motives, i.e., returning Herself back to her original powerful form whatever it takes. She doesn't help the "heroes" on their journey out of the "goodness" of her heart.

I agree. She's not sacrificing her time and her self for the sake of the white heroes, and she is a goddess, and therefore inherently "better than" -- or at least not subservient to -- the white heroes. I also found the interracial (inter-species? inter-worldly?) relationship between Tia Dalma and Davy refreshing and progressive.

When I heard that Naomie Harris had had enough (or some such phrase) of playing Tia Dalma, I wonder if it's because playing a stereotypical black, bayou-dwelling, Caribbean Voodoo priestess character is irritating to modern racially-tuned sensibilities.

(And I don't want to start an inflammatory racial debate here, I'm just putting my thoughts out there. I hope no one gets upset, because that's the last thing we all want.)

Naomie Harris' apparent reason for not being particularly interested in playing the character has more to do with the huge commitment of time that was required of her to play the part in both films, and because she wants to move on to other acting challenges at this point in her career ( ... )

I agree with you to a certain extent - the backstory regarding Tia and Jack, as well as the Calypso/Davy romance, and her individual backstory as well. All could have been developed further, but I understand that doing so would have slowed the pace down and you can't really do that and wrap things up at the same time (and at 2 hours & 48 minutes, the film is longer than most summer blockbusters already). I don't really have a huge problem with the crab scene in and of itself (it actually makes sense given the fact that she's Calypso, Goddess of the Seas), I just feel bad that it's a too-soon goodbye to a beloved supporting character (we may see her again one day, but Naomie Harris herself has said that she's pretty much had enough of the character, which I find disheartening) and not really the most satisfactory conclusion to the Calypso/Davy story ( ... )

Yes, you're right. They really couldn't have gone into more detail about Tia's backstory because there were so many sub-plots and other loose ends to tie up ( ... )

I would like to talk to her too.I would like to know why see doesnt want to return as Tia Dalma in the 4th movie if there is one.I would like to convince her to stay.I would ask her if there is anything she would like to change in the movies and if she would like to have a romantic scene with other charicters like Jack or Barbossa......you can just call me Cat I dont have a journal thing. And I think everyone who has created a story from the movie should find a way to send it to Disney.

Hmm, lots to ponder in your thoughtful post. I'm going to print it (I'm at work), read it and the other comments and return to this thread. . . .

MAELSTROM!!!!!

Oh wait, that's not necessary *winks and hugs* Personally I didn't like AWE and really hated DMC. I did like all the little bits we got from Tia though. I do agree that her ending was quite puzzling if not a little crazy. Left me scratching my head, thinking, bzuh??

I didn't go into AWE with any expectations and there fore wasn't disappointed :) I didn't try to dissect anything, as I really didn't care for any of the characters. They were just bumbling through and I was not paying much attention. I like fanfic, because it fixes all.

Oh, I posted some pics earlier this month that I would like to offer to the gallery, if you are so inclined :)

I wish the curse thing had been explained better, that's true - it seems like there's a whole other movie in that blasted thing. We don't know whether to feel sorry for Calypso because she simply lost track of time and DID still love Davy, or get pissed with her because she deliberately misled him into doing her bidding. The giant Tia didn't bother me so much - I figured it was a nod to Harryhausen, was all - but her yelling was not terribly well done. It's obvious she's saying something else (perhaps Greek? Latin?), but as my sister pointed out, if you look at her mouth, it looks like she's saying "MOTHERFUCKER! FUCK YOU!!" and a couple of choice other things before splattering into crabs. (I have to say, I sort of like the crab association - you don't mess with a crab and if you want one, you have to trap it, 'cause if you try to bother it otherwise, it'll hurt you ( ... )
