I enjoyed the way the story is developed, showing the progression of John's life.

On one note, you might want to correct this line.
he wasn’t not the alcoholic I think you want to take out the not.

God, I actually choked up a little reading this. Very nicely done - the progression goes from "aww, cute" to "my heart, it is breaking". I love the little Sherlock-notes in parentheticals, and the scene with Harry is particularly sharp. And this is just heartbreaking: "a new war wound from a battle he never fully understood." Thanks for sharing.

i love sherlock-speech: "very much a bit not good" is such a perfect line for these two. and the ending is as sad as 2x3... with john needing his cane again... and the fear that even sherlock's return won't heal everything is such an agonizing thought. but very powerful story.
