European National Health Care Redux

I was just watching a program on PBS, in which they were talking about Czechoslovakia's national health system.  It seems that a person can spend a whole week at a spa courtesy of the national health system, as long as they have a recommendation from their doctor.  Wow!

I so agree! Though my husband would tell you that England's plan isn't the best. He needed surgery and was on a waiting list. a YEAR later, they asked if he still needed it! And you can have surgery sooner, but you have to pay for it.

I have friends here in the US who were well-insured, who still had to wait long times - not only for surgery, but even for an appointment to see their doctor! So, what is the difference? For one thing there would be no annual increase in premiums and co-payments and no adjustment of covered services to eliminate certain treatments or drugs from coverage. One of my insured neighbors had to wait almost a year for a hip replacement. Like I said, something is wrong here. Insurance is not doing the job, and it is costing people a lot of money and frustration.
