"If we run into each other again," she started, still keeping some shred of optimism, "somewhere a few years down the line or something, you'd better be the best damn botanist in the world. No. In every world."

Fletcher's smile wavered, and he buried his face in the bear and started to cry. But he nodded. "Okay." His voice was muffled, but resolute. "I will. I-I promise."

...Oh god, it was supposed to be a joke. What had she said wrong? "Hey. You can do this. After this place, everything else is gonna be a cakewalk." She didn't know which one of them she was saying it for. Both, probably.

Fletcher nodded again. "Sorry. I know. I... I don't know why I'm..." Why he was crying. He didn't want to, it was embarrassing, it was stupid and immature (and he was eleven, he was too old for this). "And Tara, you have to, um... you have to be the best at whatever it is you do, too. Okay?"

She smiled at him, but it was a little strange. He looked... blurry. And her voice was coming out a little weird, too. "Gotcha. I'll let you know when I figure out what that is."

"Whatever it is, I bet it's great." Fletcher had no doubt about that. "Even if... even if it's just being a really good friend."

"Aw, c'mon," she said, still trying to play everything off like it was a joke (even though the absolute sincerity of everything was definitely not lost on her). "You're gonna make me miss you more than I will already."

Fletcher shook his head, still hiding his face though he was smiling. "Sorry. But... but you know, maybe we can find a way to see each other. Maybe?"

"With how good people are with computers around here, they'll figure something out. They'd better." She'd shifted a little further behind him, but this was so she could wipe her eyes that really only had some dirt in them or something.

Fletcher nodded. He didn't pretend to understand any of it himself.

Finally, he stood up, set the bear down on the chair, and turned to Tara and did what he did best -- gave her a hug. She seemed like she could use one.

It took her by surprise, but after a moment, she wrapped her arms around him and squeezed him tight. Just because he wasn't her boyfriend didn't mean the hug wasn't just as nice.

There really wasn't any use fighting the truth. Behind her smile, she was crying now, and she wasn't ashamed of it.

Bolt had heard the announcement over the radio...that the DRT was going to be used to send everyone home. Bolt had thought about it, and realized that he had to go back to his own dimension. Even though he knew that he had no superpowers, and even having met someone from his future, Penny was still in trouble. She still needed him, and he had to go find her.

But still...Bolt was going to miss the people he had met here, dearly. And Fletcher was definitely one of those people.

The dog hero found Fletcher easily, walked up to him and nudged his cold dog nose under the boy's arm. "Hey."

Fletcher was nodding off again after speaking with Tara, but Bolt's approach roused him. He smiled down at the dog and patted his head a bit tiredly. "Hi, Bolt. Are you okay?"

Bolt happily leaned into Fletcher's pat on the head, thumping his tail. "I'm okay! I'm here, right?" he said, tilting his head up at the boy. There were some moments when he thought he wouldn't make it, but he had, in the end.

"So...where are you going?"
