Fletcher was tired.

He hadn't slept much over the past four days, and was currently slumped in a chair that he'd pulled up along one wall in the DRT room. He was clutching the teddy bear his father had given him for his birthday, and on his back was a backpack with a few assorted items he'd gathered with the help of... he couldn't remember at this point, it was somebody who could teleport. He had some physics books, an introduction to quantum mechanics, the Game Boy and games Daniel Jackson had given him, and a few samples of rare seeds he and Russel couldn't get their hands on in Amestris.

His head was bowed and his eyes were closed, but he couldn't sleep. He'd tried a few hours ago and had woken up in a cold sweat from a nightmare he couldn't remember now. And now his mind was too full of everything that had just happened, and everything that was about to happen. They were going to go home...

...to the exact time and space from which they'd been taken. He didn't know what to make of that. It was good, for the most part; no one would know they had gone missing. But on the other hand...

His arms tightened around the teddy bear and he sighed.

Tara hadn't said much in the past day. She'd kept to herself and spent most of her time worrying about Beast Boy. In fact, that comment to CFP-TCI was the first thing she'd said to someone else in a few hours. And... she just had to hope that CFP was wrong. That there was some way to do it. Some way to make it work.

Somehow, as she walked up behind his chair and put a hand on his shoulder, she thought she knew what Fletcher was going through. She forced a smile.

Fletcher blinked when he felt that hand on his shoulder, and looked up. He smiled back at Tara, though it was a weak one. "Hi," he said, voice more shaky than he'd have liked. "Um... this is it, huh?"

"I guess so," she replied, but she was quiet, and then her facade fell. Not even sure if she should have been touching him, she let her hand drop, too. "You didn't like their answer either, did you." It wasn't really a question.

Fletcher looked back down when she dropped her hand, and he shrugged. "I... um, it's... I'm not sure. I'll have to talk to him..." He stifled a yawn and wasn't really sure whether he'd said that part out loud or in his head. He hoped it was the latter. (It wasn't.)

"Looks like we're in the same boat." And just because there wasn't anything else to do, she laughed. Here she was making a joke about boats when they'd both been trapped on one for the last week or so. Even then, her laugh was far from bright. Short and clipped. And defensive.

Fletcher wasn't sure what she was laughing about, but he nodded.

"But it's better than staying here, right?"

A pause.

"I don't know."

As a possibility bubbled to the surface.

It must have been really bad for Tara, back in her world. Fletcher couldn't even guess at it. First she didn't want her powers back, and now...

He looked back up at her. "Are you going home? Or...?"

Tara stared down the DRT. The open and fuming maw of that terrible beast called home was ready and waiting to swallow her up. All she had to do was walk in.

She tore herself away to look at Fletcher. "I don't know yet. There's someone I need to talk to, too. And if he says no... I still won't know what to do."

"Oh..." They weren't quite in the same boat, then. Fletcher was sure he and Russel and Nash could work something out. It seemed like it was more complicated for Tara. "Well... good luck." He tried smiling again.

"I'm gonna need it," she muttered.

"...Hey. Fletcher." And she managed a real smile. "I know we haven't really talked a lot, but thanks for making these last couple of days bearable."

Her smile and her words made Fletcher smile for real, too. "I-I... I didn't really..." His voice still shook from exhaustion, but he tried to cover it up by laughing a bit. "It was everyone working together. Everyone did it together."

"Sometimes all it takes is having someone else there to not feel so alone," she told him quickly and quietly. Almost conspiratorially, like she were divulging some kind of great secret. She thought he'd be able to use those words, and treated them with appropriate gravitas.

"You're right. This was a team effort. And we're a pretty good team." She raised one corner of her mouth slightly. "I'm almost gonna miss this place."

Those words got through to him, and he nodded. That was really why he'd managed not to become a complete mess during all of this -- no, ever since he'd arrived. "Me too," he answered. "Everyone here's been great." Well, almost. That didn't matter anymore! "I... Thanks for being there, too, Tara."

"Don't worry about it," she said, shrugging it off. Like she always did. None of the spotlight, none of the credit. "Promise me something, though, Fletcher?"
