The scream carried well through those abandoned streets, ringing its way past the buildings until it struck someone who could help. This time, that someone happened to be Daniel Jackson, hurrying home from an errand for a friend.

Daniel stopped cold, a chill racing down his spine as his ears picked up the all-too-recognizable sound of someone screaming. Without a second thought, he turned and bolted towards the noise, praying the person wouldn't stop until he could follow the sound to them.

When he reached Washington Square, his heart jumped into his throat. There lay his good friend Kida, battered and bloody against a tree. Daniel stared in shock as a beam of white light obliterated one of the crabs. What-? Then his eyes trained on the younger man, and he heard him speak. Daniel felt a rush of relief. Thank goodness someone else had come to help; he didn't want to think of how they might've faired if the crabs rushed them while Kida was down ( ... )
