The scream carried well through those abandoned streets, ringing its way past the buildings until it struck someone who could help. This time, that someone happened to be Daniel Jackson, hurrying home from an errand for a friend.

Daniel stopped cold, a chill racing down his spine as his ears picked up the all-too-recognizable sound of someone screaming. Without a second thought, he turned and bolted towards the noise, praying the person wouldn't stop until he could follow the sound to them.

When he reached Washington Square, his heart jumped into his throat. There lay his good friend Kida, battered and bloody against a tree. Worse, there were three more parasites coming out from behind the buildings, likely following the scent and sound of injured prey. The explorer didn't wait. With an angry shout, he dashed towards Kida, firing his P90 at the nearest crab. A light chinking sound marked the bullets that merely bounced off of its exoskeleton, but then the thing stopped with a shriek and tipped over, writhing with the pain of its bleeding eyes and mouth. One down, two to go. If he could only keep them from getting too close...

Daniel skidded to a stop by Kida, not daring to follow his first instinct, which was to drop to his knees and check her injuries. He took up a defensive stance by the tree, eyes darting around to the stalking parasite crabs. "Kida? How bad is it?" A flash of recollection reminded him that she had a Healing crystal. "Can you heal yourself? I'll try to hold them off."

Suddenly a bright white beam of pure spiritual power tore through the air, vaporizing any crab in its path.

Just down the street stood Chad, his sledgehammer hoisted over one shoulder. He'd heard the scream and come running to help. It didn't matter if these people were strangers, he had to do what he could.

"Do you need assistance?"

Daniel. Kida’d never been happier to see him, and he was rewarded by a small, pained smile. "O-only enough to survive," Kida grunted through the pain. "Cannot walk."

And then a newcomer arrived, and spectacularly at that.

Kida knew she had to be careful who she healed. Whether they knew it was connected to Atlantis, even knowledge of this was dangerous to her people. But now it was her that needed healing. And while Kida would gladly die for her people, she was still its queen. Though she trusted Milo to rule well in her absence, there was not yet an heir of royal blood for the Mother Crystal to call on in times of danger. I cannot die here. Not yet.

“Yes,” she replied simply.

The queen concentrated as best she could, inserting her crystal near the severed artery. The one advantage of being a Healer and doing as much as she did was learning hat her own limits were. Knowing well she could not cure herself all at once, anyway, she was able to use most but not all of her energy. The worst of the bleeding stopped, Kida slumped to the ground. Her eyes were open and she moved ever so slightly, proof she was still conscious if no longer able to defend herself or move.

Daniel stared in shock as a beam of white light obliterated one of the crabs. What-? Then his eyes trained on the younger man, and he heard him speak. Daniel felt a rush of relief. Thank goodness someone else had come to help; he didn't want to think of how they might've faired if the crabs rushed them while Kida was down.

"Sure," Daniel called over to the younger man, raising a hand in a partial wave. "Help would not be unwelcome right about now."

The statement was amplified slightly when another pair of crabs appeared. Daniel immediately powdered one with his P90, pondering in the back of his mind how nice it must be for people who could just blast these things to kingdom come. Oh well, he'd have to be satisfied with the less efficient method: lots and lots of bullets.

Hoping that the new guy could do a repeat of his last move on the other crab, Daniel finally crouched down next to Kida. It occurred to him that she might still not want too many people to know about her Healing ability, so he carefully positioned himself between her and the young man just enough to block his view.

"Do whatever you can, Kida," he murmured, watching carefully for any crabs that might try to sneak up on them. "We'll get you out of here."

The linguist watched as she used the crystal on her bleeding wound, and was relieved to see it slow dramatically. When Kida slumped over, he managed to catch her shoulders and head, helping her settle against the ground a little more gently. There were bandages in his pack that he could use to wrap her wounds, but Daniel wasn't sure they had the time to spare for that. He looked up to see how the stranger was doing with the crabs.

Sado nodded to Daniel, and without another word charged forward, his powerful legs eating up ground as he moved in close, swinging his sledgehammer above his head.

The first crab that pounced top meet him was greeted with the steel weapon slamming into its face with enough force to tear off its lower jaw, sending the creature writhing to the ground. The second met Sado's steel toed boot, snapping its head backwards. Rolling backwards, the creature recovered and was about to pounce, only to have his weapon smash it with three blows to the head.

Still, the two creatures had halted his momentum, and Sado knew the next few would be harder to beat. Still, out of the corner of his eye he saw the man blocking the woman from his view. Sado shrugged, figuring they likely had good reason for hiding whatever it was from him, and did not press further.

Besides, he had a battle to fight, he could afford no distractions.

Kida felt herself be caught. Barely awake, she tried to focus on the person in front of her. Only through virtue of proximity could she tell it was Daniel. "R... Run..." Her voice was soft.

Only through shadows could she see the other fight, and quite impressively.

The faint whisper from Kida sent a cold chill down Daniel's back as the noise of battle behind him suddenly sharpened into focus. Daniel whirled around, jumping to his feet and- ...Holy-! Where had all of those come from?! Daniel snarled at himself as he took up a position, for not paying attention and leaving the unfamiliar teenager doing all the defending.

"Hold on, Kida, we're not leaving without you." With that determined assurance, Daniel stood over the woman and took aim at some of the crabs that were coming from the other direction.

It took almost an entire clip from his P90 to take one of them out, but as soon as it dropped, Daniel turned the gun on another one and was instantly rewarded with screeches as he successfully nailed it in the eyes. That one went into mad convulsions, tearing at its face with its claws - effectively out of commission. Naturally, there wasn't time to celebrate as another one rushed him, shrieking like a banshee on steroids.

Ka-BLAM! The shotgun bucked once, then twice, unloading its charges into the oncoming crab. The monster didn't even shriek as it fell over - probably due to the sudden lack of a head. Daniel grimly reloaded, taking a moment to glance over at the strange in case he needed help. Although he kind of suspected by now that the other was a little better equiped for close-range combat than him.

Twisting Sado caught one of the leaping creatures on his arm, the strange armor that encased it keeping the crab's jaws at bay. Despite the creature's bulk and momentum pressing down on him, Sado took a step back to steady himself, the monster's flailing claws slashing lines in his shirt.

Face twisting from exertion, he twisted his hips and swung out his arm at the nearest building. Unable to find purchase for its fangs on the smooth armor, the crab was flung off by the motion, sailing through the air to smash into the brick wall with a wet snapping sound.

Seconds later the creature was up again, one leg curled against its side, and charged with mindless fury. The new creatures endurance, so much greater than their smaller kin, still surprised Sado, but not for long.

Before it could get much closer it was met with Sado's hammer to its midsection, snapping the crab's ribs and doing untold internal damage.

Glancing up from the animal's twitching form, Sado glanced over at Daniel and said, "Try to herd them together."

Kida pushed her lungs into motion, purposefully trying to take in as many breaths as possible and force herself to me more alert. She wished for a surge in adrenaline, but she already had it racing through her blood from earlier. That alone would not give her the energy she so desperately needed.

"Still cannot... walk." The huntress hated this and it showed clearly on her face. Never had she been this helpless. Not only could she not even sit up, she could barely hold up her head. All she could do was watch.

How ironic that last time she was bitten, she was protecting two others. This time, she needed the protection.

Daniel nodded; he had an idea of what Sado was planning, but it would be tricky. The crabs didn't 'herd' very easily; they tended to come at you no matter what you threw at them. Maybe that was the answer. Within seconds, Daniel had his plan. With one last glance to make sure Kida was safe for the moment, he braced himself, and bolted out into the street.

The sound of a P90 firing into the air echoed across the sqaure, and then another few rounds were aimed at some of the crabs running toward Sado. The bullets pinged harmlessly off of their carapaces, but Daniel had accomplished his goal: with a series of shrieking snarls, most of them turned and came after him. The doctor fired a few more rounds at them, then turned tail and ran full-out, aiming straight for his target. He had absolutely no room to get this wrong.

With a lunge, Daniel dove through the open window of the abandoned building, rolling once and to his feet when he hit the floor. Then he spun back around and slammed the window closed - just in time for a crab with poor aim to bounce off of the frame. Now all of them were out there at once, and that was what was saving the man; their scrabbling bodies climbing over and fighting with each other to get at him kept any of them from managing to break through the glass.

Daniel didn't waste a second; as soon as the window was closed, he dashed across the room and against the wall. If the teenager outside was going to do what he thought he was going to do, Daniel did not want to be in the way.

Once Daniel's fire had forced the majority of the crabs into a tight bunch against the building Sado let his hammer's head fall onto the cement with a crack, gripping the handle loosely with his left hand. This freed up his armored right hand, which had become encased in a glowing nimbus of power.

Launching himself forward, the teenager moved to line himself up parallel with the building Daniel had run into. Long legs eating up ground, Sado threw himself into a baseball slide, boots kicking up dirt as he stopped just short of the wall of the building. As one, dozen's of alien eyes turned to face him, and the entire swarm of crabs let out sounds of challenge.

Sado just smirked slightly, then thrust his arm forward and released the power he had gathered. There was a blinding flash as a beam of pure spiritual energy erupted from the teenager's armored fist and engulfed the mass of crabs. Most of the creature's barely had time to shriek before they were incinerated by the force of the blast, only smoking stubs of their legs remaining. The ones on the outside of the herd were cut in half or otherwise mangled by Sado's attack, and were left to flop around uselessly.

The attack itself kept going until it hit an overturned cab, and caused a rather loud explosion, throwing shrapnel over the street.

Wincing, Sado tried to keep himself between the woman and the blast, glad that the street was empty at that time. He didn't like using his blasts in such a crowded area, but sometimes it was necessary.

Suddenly out of breath, Sado sank to one knee on the cement, having reached his limit of two blasts a day. He hoped it was enough.
