Carter had landed only a few blocks away the day before, and he hadn't had much of a chance to get anywhere. After circling the block, he'd decided it was too cold and a bit too strange to tackle on his own. So he'd retreated back to the office building to get his bearings. And thanks to the lovely network provided to the city, he'd been able to wrap his head around the basic details of the situation at hand. Mal had actually heard someone approaching, and was turning to look just as Carter introduced himself, which fortunately meant their first meeting didn't involve Mal pointing a gun at him. Sadly, gun pointing was usually rather prominently involved in most of Mal's introductions.
Giving the other man a rather suspicious look, Mal replied, "Hi."
After a minute of awkward silence Mal figured he should probably expand upon that. "To answer your earlier question, this here appears to be the tail end of a rather poor joke. These boxes hold several months worth of food, which unless you just got here you should be well aware is in rather high demand at this point. Seems someone decided they didn't want us to starve."
Mal didn't bother to explain what he was doing here. It was probably pretty obvious.
Carter had experienced his fair share of introductions at gun point. It sort of came with the job description. Well, the job he'd had before his sheriffing days. And once that started, things got a lot more interesting. It wasn't every day you got threatened with an ultrasonic fishing rod, after all. And as such, he still approached with a little caution

Oh, so he was new. Well, or he was lying, but if he was he was a damn good actor, so Mal figured he'd at least try to be personable. He was sure Kaylee would give him no end of hell for being a grouch on Christmas
