Nope you're not in the wrong. But then again as you said, it may not be about being wrong at all. Maybe it's best to just not talk to him at all since the breakup? And wait for things to heal over and for you guys to relax? Him trying to get back at you over such a little thing is really immature of him.
It looks like you both have some steam that needs to be let out, and it's best that that's done away from each other.
If it's meant to be, even just as a friendship, then you'll go back to each other no matter how long this break is.
