Growing up in Germany, it does not take you long to learn that being up early in the morning, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, is not simply a virtue, but your sacred Teutonic duty.
Germans! LOL I would not be a good German. I am a night owl and hate mornings but when I worked I was very good about getting up on time and even getting my daughters up and ready for school early as well.
As I'm up at five every morning, I understand this all too well. :) I feel like an unproductive sloth if I find that my body has decided I actually need sleep and I don't wake up until 8:30 or 9:00 on weekends.
My husband is more like your Italian, rolling out of bed bleary-eyed at 10:00am, wishing he could just go back to sleep for a few more hours. It used to drive me crazy, but I've learned to love my mornings alone with my thoughts. :)
