The Entertainer, Faith Healer, The Wharf Revue, Denial

Hmmm. I tend to forget that 'reading' is not the same thing as 'communicating'. Hi! Things are piling up, and I do pretty much use this journal as my record of events, so here goes.

Theatre

Saw the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company screening of The Entertainer (by John Osborne), starring the aforementioned Kenneth Branagh. This production was ( Read more... )

Hi!

M. Night Shyamalan... I keep rooting for him to do something amazing, and it never happens.

Hiya! And oh, I know, I loved The Sixth Sense (like everybody) and even quite enjoyed a few of his other ones, but he seems to be on a steady downwards trend... it's a shame.

oh weird, I had no idea Gatiss and Scott were in Denial! I have no plans to see it because I have a personal ban on holocaust movies (preaching to the choir, and they basically destroy me for at least a week, even the bad ones), but it sure would be interesting to see the two of them in a courtroom drama.

I can't believe they're doing a Trainspotting sequel. I'll have to wait for the reviews before I decide how I feel... I'm worried it will just be a nostalgic money-grab, and I'd hate for it to sour my feelings on the original.

It's not the kind of movie you'd expect to see them in, really, but I suspect it's a lot about profile and familiarity. I don't even know why I read/saw so much Holocaust stuff growing up - possibly I always felt like an outsider for various reasons, and latched onto them as extreme examples. Which might sound tacky and inappropriate from an adult perspective, but it's the only real theory I have. Obviously it's not truly personal for me, though.

See, that's exactly how I felt when I heard, too, so I get it. But I can't resist *g*

Mark's character turned out to be Dutch Ha! I NEED to see this now so I can judge him horribly - a true Dutch accent is only rarely subtle I think. I will have thoughts about this! I couldn't find it as a download yet though. Will look out for it *g*

Hee! I very much suspect he was trying to avoid the British "foreigner comedic accent" (VE HAF VAYS OF MAKING YOU TALK!) and therefore went the other way in making it understated. It might well be less pronounced than you'd find authentic! Love to hear what you think *g*

I was keen on seeing Denial [mostly because of Andrew Scott] and then I heard not great things about Rachel Weisz's performance. I usually like her. So I dunno, maybe I'll just wait to see it on the small screen. I didn't even know MG was in it!

M Night Shyamalan is so solidly disappointing. :-/

Aaaaaah, I can't wait until T2. I am thrilled that Danny Boyle waited twenty whole years to do a sequel. That alone was a stroke of genius, man. Even though everyone looks really amazing for a bunch of smackheads. :D Pity Kevin McKidd won't be in it though.

I'm a bit envious of you seeing all that theater. The last straight play I saw was at the Steppenwolf about ten years ago, maybe? It was about baseball, I can't even remember the name of it. I think I was in the performing arts too long though - live events make me horribly nervous, generally. A very odd legacy.

Well, I haven't read much in the way of reviews, but she seemed fine to me. I did enjoy her Brooklyn?/Queens?/idk accent, but maybe that was part of what people didn't like. She wasn't outstanding, but she was... fine. The whole thing was really just like one of those worthy-but-stolid BBC dramas, except with Americans. *googles* hah, it was a British director - you can almost tell just by watching it. MG is lovely, as always. One day there may be something I don't like him in, and then I will be sad, but it hasn't happened yet *g*

It's a solid movie with historical interest, so a worthwhile watch if you want to catch them. As always, would love to hear your thoughts if you see it :)
