I've been decoding reading this book, and it takes a while to process cause the entire book is written like a textbook - a textbook written by a snotty professor who is full of himself and uses his language to make himself feel important. But I keep reading because of the ideas he says are really intruging. Here's one excerpt that I found cool ( Read more... )

the very first thing you think of
"Hey, is that Heather?" (Sorry. I'm lame.)

immediate emotional response
Wow. That's kinda dark. And not happy. Kinda decaying, especially on the top left. Poison green dripping downwards. It looks like the girl is just...watching. Observing. Not forming an opinion or judging...yet. Like maybe she caused this and is observing the effects.

It feels almost like she's peering over a bush -- the purple part is the part near her, and the green is a few feet off in the distance. (I can show you where I delineate that the next time you're here.)

Not something I'd print and put on my walls. Not saying it's bad, just, kinda puts me on edge. Strikes a bad chord with me - nothing out of tune, but a minor, unhappy sounding chord.

(I don't know how I feel about the twig in the bottom left. It feels a little too defined, while everything else is kinda...not soft, but warping? Melty? It just feels too hard and angular for the rest of the piece.)

First thing - Heather again? >D

Also I think I see the ice forest dealy in there. I can't give a more intelligent response right now, gotta run n'stuff.

Immediate emotional response? "Heather!" And then... she looks like an angry goddess or something.. and the green to red makes me think something but I can't tell what >D

I have like 500 images of Heather, in several interesting/dynamic poses. About 450 more images of any other person. :-p

The ice forest is part of the bg - but one of the 'failed' pics from that. The pic came out kinda blurred and it's lighting was utter crap (damn you noontime sun!)

If you want me too I'll make sure my next art piece features one of my photos of you ;)

"uses his language to make himself feel important" (:

Don and I had a discussion at work comparing the styles of Edgar Allan Poe and James Joyce. It boiled down to Poe saying "I know more about words than you and if you don't believe me watch this!" and Joyce saying "I've forgotten more words and metaphors than you'll ever know, but I'm not going to beat you about the head with my lexicon."

The piece feels like the type of nightclub I would really enjoy. The top left quadrant has a natural feel, like a grotto or hanging gardens. Progressing out of the green area, the right side of the piece feels blacklit.

It helps that I was unable to immediately recognize what the background image was. Only after looking closer and reading the earlier notes did the branch appear more tangible to me. By contrast the face, recognizable as a face but not as anyone familiar to me, seems a bit too concrete but I don't know how I'd change that.

What a radical technique. I may have to do this.

Sadly my mind immediately thought of Jim Joyce instead of James Joyce, so I had a very blonde moment of "huh?" ^_^

Thanks for your input - unfortunately asking ppl who are immediately involved in your life day in/day out is that they can "decompose" the image and pull apart the images (and they know the model). So it's refreshing to hear from someone who can't be like "I was there when you took that picture!"

You should try it - and post your results so I can see too!

It's hard not to focus off of the recognizable image of the person
That's kinda what i find cool -- she takes up maybe 20% of the image and is in the very corner of it. Yet you spend 90% of your time staring at it.

You still doing a lot of side work? Cause I may have a relay image to send your way. Heather gave me a image to work with and i'm playing around with it now. I could bring it when we get together in January, if you wanted.

And now for my actual response...

It feels like she's stuck there, blind and stuck there... not like a natural piece of the scenery, more like she was cursed to be there or something -- that comes from loking at her eyes - or lack thereof. She doesn't seem particularly forlorn about it, but that seems the case nonetheless.

I like the transition from cool green to warm red... it makes it seem like the red part is alive/heated almost... or the interior. I don't got much else to say, but at least it's more than "Heather" :P
