Chalk Music for Birdies

Birdie's first musical love was Laurie Berkner. From there she got super obsessed with one specific New Pornographers album. Now she requests the Chalk Festival Song. That requires some explanation, so let's back up.

Unlike my childhood home, our neighborhood has sidewalks. Our house actually has the longest sidewalk in the neighborhood due to our weirdly curved corner lot, plus we have one of the only double-wide driveways on the street, so there's plenty of concrete for Birdie to chalk on. Accordingly, she has a nice little plastic bin full of chalk, which she's already burned through once this summer. And if for some reason she doesn't bring the chalk when we go outside, our neighbors kids L&E have a big basket of their own to share. The chalk they don't draw with ends up as dust on their hands and clothes, which is kind of fun and comparatively easy to clean.

The Cleveland Museum of Art has a chalk festival every year. Some professional artists do major chalkings, and amateurs can reserve a sidewalk square and do their own thing. M took Birdie to it in mid-September and both of them had a great time. Birdie returned covered in chalk and very happy about seeing Bluey and other characters on sidewalks.

She also returned with a new earworm, courtesy of the sound system that was pumping out music during the show. Ever since she's requested the "Chalk Festival Song," which is Despacito by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee. I was not particularly familiar with this song, but it's pretty solid.

The song is sung entirely in Spanish, but at this moment if I you google "Despacito Lyrics" the second hit after a lyric video is "‘Despacito’ English Translation Reveals Luis Fonsi’s Less-Than-Innocent Lyrics." That doesn't bother me, as my daughter doesn't understand Spanish and even the most explicit stuff has some innuendo around it, plus she's not even 3. What really bothers me is that she likes a song by a guy named "Daddy Yankee," which given my view on the Yankees in general seems problematic. It could be worse though, she likes the original, not the Justin Bieber remix.

We don't have this album, but now that M has a new smart phone she can run Spotify and she is able to play it more or less on request when Birdie asks for it. Of course, this means when it's just me and her and she asks for it, she is disappointed.

I think I may need to create a "Birdie Music" tag!
