Chakra elemental affinities were a bit like genetics. Just because both parents were brown-haired, it didn't mean that their son would be brown-haired as well. He could very well inherit some left-over genes from three generations back and suddenly come out a blond. Most of the people in Fire Country were indeed brown-haired, so the fact that his student was blond probably should have tipped Jiraiya straight away to the fact that he would be different.
The Toad Sage had decided that his genin team was old enough to start learning about elemental chakra manipulation, so he had brought the usual chakra-sensitive paper to test their primary affinities and given them the standard instructions on what to do.
His first two students' results had been simple and predictable enough. One's paper turned to dust and the other burst into flames: Earth and Fire were the most common types of chakra in the country. If one of them wasn't the primary affinity, it was a safe bet to say that they would be the secondary (and tertiary, if such existed) elements. Minato, on the other hand...
Determined not to be outdone by his teammates, the little eleven-year-old blond fiercely gripped the square of chakra-sensitive paper between his hands. Jiraiya would have told him to hold it some distance away in case it caught on fire, but he believed that experience made the best teacher. It wasn't his hands that would get burnt, anyway.
Minato stood for almost a full minute focusing as much chakra as he could into his hands, but nothing seemed to be happening. Jiraiya was looking at him in that expectant manner of his and he could see tiny grins threatening to spread on his teammates' faces. They were probably thrilled to find that there was in fact something he couldn't do. With a sigh, he decided to face the humiliation and take a break.
"Nothing's happening, sensei."
"Let me see, maybe the paper's already been exposed to something and isn't working as it should."
Minato almost flushed then, as he heard the muffled sounds coming his two friends. He knew they didn't mean anything by it, but it was still embarrassing that the acclaimed class genius was failing at something so trivial. He unclasped his hands and stretched out the one with the paper on it for his teacher to see.
Jiraiya's eyes widened immediately and Minato wondered what was going on - then the old man started laughing and he was just plain annoyed.
"Well, you sure live up to your name," the white-haired man said, but Minato didn't really care enough to decipher his usual inane comments at the time.
"What is it?"
"I didn't bother to explain it before, because it's so rare - there hasn't been anyone in Konoha with that kind of affinity for at least ten years - but..."
At this point, Jiraiya reached to pick up the piece of paper from Minato's hand, but only half of it went along. The blond looked down at his hand and, sure enough, there was the other half. The cut had been so fine, that he hadn't even noticed it.
"Congratulations, Namikaze. Your primary affinity is wind."
